29 other teams would want him, too, you know.

I was suggesting Chara...

Obviously Ottawa can't sign both Chara AND Redden.

'Cause like the majority of posters are saying. Nobody wants to play here so it's either you draft or trade for them.

Anyway we will wait till July 1st anyway 'cause I have that great feeling that we're done for the day.....

Good for keeping our prospects, bad for doing better in the playoffs....if we ever make it. Mixed emotions....

We won't have the money to sign him at the max, which is probably what he'll get.

Tough call. On the one hand, you could easily argue that the Habs will not contend this year no matter who they get, so why give up an asset at the deadline when you can get a UFA for nothing? On the other hand, that deadline player could put us over the top against teams like Atlanta, TB, and even Jersey, giving us a more favourable first round matchup. As it stands now, I don't want to face the Canes in round one. I think they'll wipe the floor with us. The Sens, on the other hand, I think we could upset, and I think we will outright beat the Rangers. We are more of a playoff style team than they are.

I have mixed feelings about this. The Theo for Aebi WOULD have been a good trade IF we had had a great player (Jokinen, Bert...)

But this summer, the cap will go up and we won't be able to sign a great player...

So I don't really like the trade in the moment...

Before you think the Canes will obliterate the Habs, don't forget Theo won't be in nets.

He's largely responsible for 2 of the blowouts vs. the 'Canes, if not all three.

Whether trading him was a good idea remains to be seen, but I don't think a good comparison of the teams' strength can be drawn from those games.

the players may sign for less in order to go for a second cup.

SO now we know.
2-3 mil current cap room + 3.5 from the Theo contract+ dumping sundstrom and a few others 2 mil + the cap goes up 2-3 mil====
at LEAST 10 mil war chest.

That's 2-3 very good players that are targeted at the holes the Habs have and can't fill with good rookies.

Since the Habs won't win the cup this year and nobody offered good stuff for the guys we want to dump then just wait 3.5 months and fix your own problems without costing a rookie or a pick.

Gaineys refusal to overpay now put him in the drivers seat in 3.5 months.

The Habs are better this year then last year.
The Habs will be better next year then this year for sure.
The Habs in 2008, with the final addition of chip and tender will be a darn good team. That's the plan, Gainey is sticking to it and will not change his mind in a foolish attempt for a quick fix.

Gainey has assesed the Habs and the farm system perfectly.
Like everyone else I hope the Habs surprise in the first round but I am just drooling at the thought of next training camp.
