It is suggested in The Buffalo News this morning that the only way Afinogenov can help the Sabres is if he's included in a deal to fill a need. I'm not so sure about that, at least not yet, but here's the package:

They might as part of a three way with Salo going to a team like San Jose, Boston or Carolina in return for some grit.
The Oilers already have some grit in Ryan Smyth, Ethan Moreau, Raffi Torres, Brad Isbister, Jason Chimera and the list goes on...But what the Oilers lack are true goalscorers, sure Ales Hemsky and Radek Dvorak have some skill at putting the puck in the back of the net but it wouldn't hurt adding another one...

I could actually see something like this. With the formation of the Pyatt/Drury/Briere line, there's a spot for Comrie IMO. The deal would have to expand, but there's something there...

I believe Ghost meant that the grit would be acquired by the Sabres...for Salo.
I'd like to see a 3 way deal happen with Edmonton, Buffalo and Carolina...
Buffalo has some interesting players in Afinogenov, Biron and Kalinin and Carolina has Vasicek, Svoboda and Vrbata. If Comrie could land 2 of those players I listed above i'll be jumpin for days...
To Buffalo: Grier, Ballard (give him back!), Colorado's 2nd.
To Colorado: Kolzing, 2 million cash
To Washington: Afinogenov, Biron, Botterill (why in the world do you want him???)

How 'bout:
To Buffalo:
Mike Comrie + Matthew Greene + 5th
To Edmonton:
Martin Biron + Maxim Afinogenov + Jiri Novotny

Then
Salo to Boston for a 3rd/prospect
Have you not noticed that Boston has Felix Potvin...and he can't even be called the starter because unlike Buffalo, Boston's young netminder is playing up to expectation? As of now, Raycroft is # 6 in the league with GA at 1.65 and #3 with save percentage at .944!

Leave Boston out of this, things are finally starting to look good

Even if things have drastically changed in 3 weeks/3months....What would Boston do with another goalie? We've got a hotshot 19 year old in the AHL that is going to be better than Raycroft. We've got Raycroft at 23, who will be around for a while, and at this rate...doesn't look like he will need anymore support than Potvin is giving. We've got Potvin who we just signed, and is posting reasonable # along with adding confidence to the team.
If Salo comes....who goes? A guy like Curtis Joseph...maybe you make a little room, only if you team is in trouble. But Salo? No deal.
That's an interesting package, Biron and Afinogenov. I'd love to be able to put a package together to land something like that, but unfortunately we have nothing the Sabres would need. I think they're almost set on defense.
Rather than adding Mike Comrie, I would think the Sabres would be more interested in a player like Jason Smith. I doubt he is available, but a team can only have so many small players. I know Comrie has skill, but he is small and could be a problem in the locker room.
I tihnk we have to analyze the Comrie rumors as if they are true, and I mean his salary demands...Buffalo cannot add any more payroll at this point so as proposed:
to Buf:
Comre (demanding 3.5 to 4 annually)
Matt Greene (still in college)
to Edmonton:
Biron (2.2mm)
Afinogenov (approx 1.1mm)
That means that Buffalo needs to get Comrie to take a deal that would pay him at most $3mm for the next 2 years.
Would this happen in addition to Salo getting dealt, I don't think so. And after all that the Sabres still need Miller and Mika to show up
Question i have is Buffalo able to take on some Salary? If they are they might be in a position to make a great deal. and open the door for a good 3 way deal: I think they might be willing to give up Afiniganov, Connelly, and possibly Biron. If they could take on some salary 2-3 million than possibly there could be a few deals out there.
Colorado - Olaf Kolzig,
Washington - Martin Biron, Maxim Affiniganov, tim Connelly, Colorado 1st
Buffalo - Kieth Ballard, Mike Grier, Washington 1st, Colorado 3rd
not sure if somthing like this could work? i think it needs some fine tunning
Okay first and foremost, some people on this boards continue to misunderstand the Comrie situation. Money means nothing...i don't expect him to be demanding anything more than 2.2 million which is a pretty good bang for your buck in all relevance. Mike hasn't signed because he no longer wants to be an Oiler, he feels there is too much pressure on him to perform in front of his hometown crowd. He wants a change of scenery more than a raise in salary!!!
The Oilers can NOT afford to give up on one of their most promising defense prospects in Matt Greene without getting one in return.
Jiri Novotny doesn't really do much for me so my proposed deal would be;
To Edmonton: Martin Biron, Maxim Afinogenov, and Dmitri Khalinin
Matt Greene isn't that promising as you think, he has great size but that's all he brings to the table. In my mind he doesn't have what it takes to play in the NHL but he could be a regular farm leaguer. And now that he is 20 years old and playing one more year at the University of North Dakota he should be ready for the Toronto Roadrunners next season...

I would typically agree with you about adding another small forward but it seems as though management is sacrificing size and toughness for goal-scoring (which may or may not be a smart idea). With the formation and subsequent success of the Pyatt/Drury/Briere line, I really think there's a spot for Comrie on this team, on a line with Satan and Kotalik more specifically. Those are two fine scoring lines IMHO. Plus, we really aren't downgrading in size because Comrie simply replaces Afinogenov. And I think once Boulton gets healthy, the line of Eric, Peters, and Mair is gonna be an adequate physical presence.
