the Deadline Trade Awards

I know we won't really know until May who won the deadline, and for some teams they won't know for several years. But let's just go with first impressions here, who would you give the following awards to? You can include any trade in the past week.

Best value for an impending UFA:
Best value for a worthless or of negative value player:
Best mortgaging of one's future:
Best throw-in:
Best ripoff of another team:
Best trade for both teams involved:
Best overall team improvement for this year:
Best overall team improvement for the future:
Special achievement for not making sense:

Feel free to add your own categories as well.

It works either way. One just refers to the trade deadline, one refers to the trades made at the deadline.

Special acheivement for not making sense: Tampa Bay Lightning. The coach and GM have been harping for a while about defensive depth, powerplay help and goaltending. So to help improve the club, they didn't do a damn thing to address any of their needs.

Best value for an impending UFA: a 1st and Beech for Witt
Best value for a worthless or of negative value player: Kvasha for a 3rd
Best mortgaging of one's future: Canucks giving up Skinner, 2 2nds, 3, 4 (to be fair teams this year largely avoided some of the serious mortgages done in the past)
Best throw-in: Skoula, allowed the Stars to get a 2nd back and will probably be better for the Wild than any other team.
Best ripoff of another team: 2 2nds and a player for bottom pairing Gauthier
Best trade for both teams involved: Carney for a 2nd and Skinner, both teams got exactly what they needed, a vet defenseman who has been a warrior in the playoffs while the Ducks get a good prospect and a pick.
Best overall team improvement for this year: Canucks did a great job of bolstering their defense, as well as bringing in a more experienced (and arguably more talented) goaltender to take the workload off Auld.
Best overall team improvement for the future: Biased, but the Islanders add possibly three 3rd rounders, and two former 1st round picks in Tembellini and Grebeshkov while giving up pretty much nothing that figured into the future.
Special achievement for not making sense: Theodore for Aebischer. Seriously, ***?

You've never said, "yeah, he was moved in a deadline trade?" It's a lot easier than saying "a trade at the trade deadline," or "a trade deadline trade."

In defense of Colorado, Lacroix basically took a home run swing hoping to hit a grand slam, although he might go down striking out. We might look at this deal a few years from now and say he is a genious.

No matter what happens from a montreal point of view, i say it was a good deal on there part(because i think he will never regain his form with the media constantly on his case and they free up cap space) but i will wait and see how it works out for Colorado over the life of the contract before i judge it. That being said they might have been better waiting till the off season to trade for him, but who knows if a deal like this would be on the table then.

I guess I'd refer to it as a "deadline deal" or "moved at the trade deadline".

No kidding i don't think there should even be any other nominees in this category. When i heard this trade i seriously asked myself what the hell they were thinking. Colorado might be the only team in contention who made their team worse at the deadline. I would laugh if they end upmissing the playofffs because of this.

Best rip-off was definitely Dallas getting Mitchell and a 2nd for Belle/Skoula. Best 'throw-in' would also be that 2nd round pick!

Best value for an impending UFA: Roloson. Was the backup in Minn. and still brought back a good haul.

Best value for a worthless or of negative value player: Kvasha. Few players have more negative value.

Best mortgaging of one's future: LA. Seems like the price of players went down on the 9th compared to the 8th. Could have taken Ozo and Samsonov for a lot cheaper than two excellent prospects.

Best throw-in:

Best ripoff of another team: Kvasha. Can't believe a non-playoff team would give up a 3rd for him.

Best trade for both teams involved: Rangers getting Ozo for a 3rd. Rangers get an extremely skilled QB without giving up much, Ducks dump a bad salary for next season and a player who needs a change of scenery.

Best overall team improvement for this year: Vancouver. Quality backup goaltender and quality dmen will help a lot.

Best overall team improvement for the future: Islanders. Two very good prospects, a few picks, and some cap room.

Special achievement for not making sense: Colorado. They got a playoff to help them in the playoffs, which they may not make because he is on IR.
Honorable mention to Phoenix for taking Kvasha...a player who if somehow gets it together will just demand more money as a UFA.

Not only might they have gotten worse...they gave themselves a cap headache for the next two years in the process.

What's wrong in thinking a guy who has 40 points in 56 games can't be a #2 center?
