Boom Boom, I never got to see you play I was too young. But the stories I have heard are things of legend. Legends like you are what made and make to this day our team so special.

Tonight as your family and friends gather to see your jersey raised to the Bell Centre rafters, we will all take time to reflect on you, and the contruibitions you made to this team.

The sadness we feel today with your passing will be hard, but we will tongiht celebrate your life as a Montreal Canadien.

Thanks for the memories,

R.I.P

I don't believe there really was a feud between the two that delayed the retiring. Habs are just really stingy when it comes to this.

The article linked in the first post has some good info on the past tension between Boom Boom, the fans and the organization. Any bad blood would be related to how his career ended, namely forced into retirement as well as a feeling of being held back in his coaching endeavours as Toe Blake had a firm grasp on those reins.

Talk about an unfortunate series of events...

I'll be at the game tonight to pay my respects, and as a guy who went to the viewing of the Rocket and asked him there to guide the team, I shall do the same thing tonight.

It will be a viewing without the corpse. I hope the guys come out strong tonight.

Rest In Peace, Boom-Boom.

So sad, death never happens at a good time but this is the worst of times when his number is going to be retired. RIP

I am one of those that had the pleasure of seeing him play, only on tv, never live & on many cold winter nights I was the Boomer gliding across that frozen pond just waiting to unleash my 'not so powerful' slapshot.

RIP Boomer, you will always be alive in the hearts of Habs fans.

There will be many teary eyed Habs fans at the rink tonight and watching the game at home including myself. Boom Boom was a great player and innovator of the game and will be sorely missed.

Condolences go out to his family. It's sad that Mr. Geoffrion couldn't have lived to see his number rise to the rafters. But perhaps it's fitting that his family will be there to represent him in a venue that best exhibits his life's achievements in front of thousands of Habs fans.

May God bless you and your family Boom Boom. Rest in peace.

Keep in mind what the Boomer was all about. He was full of pride and detrmination, and wanted to win above all else. When not on the ice, he wanted to entertain, make people laugh, make some noise. Read Red Fisher's column today. You'll get a nice sense of the man. Be thankful that his illness was short. You hate to see anyone, especially someone that full of life suffer a pronlonged illness. He would've enjoyed this evening. I do think he's resting easy knowing he'll be remembered and honoured in this fashion.

Boom Boom was a hab legend and will be remembered as such. But man, I can't help remembering him in that old Miller Lite commercial, playing some goofy trivia game and getting all the answers right by pure luck. And then at the end, his classic line, delivered with a big smile: "'Dis game is easy!". I still use that line and I picture him every time I do.

RIP Boom Boom.

From all I've heard about the man, nothing would make him happier than to know that his lasting legacy will be to bring a smile to someone's face.

I'm pretty sad for the fanily... I hope the Habs win tonight in honor of this great player.

Is there gonna be a little minute of silence before the game to remember this great man?

Tears are in my eyes as I read all of this. It's just so very sad that he waited so long for this retirement ceremony and now he's gone. I think that since it was his wish to have the number retired regardless, that tonight they should try to celebrate even in the sadness because it seems that's what he would want.

RIP Boom Boom and Gold Bless is family.

What an emotional night this is going to be for his Family, and the Habs. What a way to go out though, having your jersey retired on the day of your passing. I know a part of me wants him to be there in person, but all 21 273 people tonight at the Bell center and the thousands watching at home will be chanting his name louder than ever before. Tonight is gonna be about giving respect to humanity and let me tell you, it means more than just congratulating just a career. I give you my sincere Thank Yous for all that you have done for the Habs Organization when you were a player and post retirement. May God bless you.
