Good to see that there are players who are loyal to their teams. Vancouver has a great set up, hope they take advantage of the room created by signing these guys at such a below market deal.

I agree. The report is a 4 year, 24 million dollar deal...that works out to 6 million a year. Very palatable.

Considering how everyone was saying he wanted Tkachuk money or Jagr money, this deal is a godsend. It doesn't throw our whole payroll out of whack, which is extremely good news. Very glad to see that Bertuzzi will be here and here to stay for a long time.

What's your source on that report? TSN had that the deal was rumoured to be 24 million BEFORE but that was when it was supposed to be a 3 year deal.

For those who may still be harbouring any question about Al Strachan's credibility, this deal should be held in evidence against Mr. Strachan.

Structure of the deal:
Quote:
VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- The Vancouver Canucks re-signed Todd Bertuzzi to a $28 million, four-year contract Sunday.

The deal, which runs through the end of the 2006-07 season, includes a $3 million signing bonus, Bertuzzi's agent said.

Pat Morris said Bertuzzi would make $4.3 million this season, $6.6 million next season and $6.9 million in each of the final two years.

Very nice deal for the Canucks. Says a lot about Bertuzzi that he would sign for that much.

Fair money IMO,Berts a big power guy and very important to the Nucks,i just wonder if the imposing CBA problems had much of a hand in the decision to not go for the 8-9 mil range?

6.9 is workable even if a hard cap is put in place.

It seems to me that the only reason they renegotiaded this years contract is to be able to say the deal is for 6.9M/Year instead of closer to 8m. Which makes sense for Burke since he lets his stars salaries be the measure for every other canucks players contract.

Considering he was making 3.7M this year already the extra money put into this is 24M for 3 additional years, which breaks it down to 8M/year. There are probably slightly less incentives compared to the contract he had, so lets say this is a 7.5M/year deal. Not insane, but it certainly will move the demands of other Canucks players quite a bit higher.

I think the Canucks are going to handle it just fine. As long as the team is doing ok they can support a higher salary structure.

The Canucks did get a good deal, much like they did with Naslund. I think Bertuzzi's market value is much higher. Brian Burke has got these guys thinking team first, which is always a good thing.

I'd say the terms of the deal are decent. It still comes out to 7 million a year.

I guess it depends on what Bertuzzi does over the next 4 years. I think there's a chance he'll lose motivation and start playing like the Bertuzzi of a few years ago (good, but not great).

True. I wonder how many people would say this is such a great deal if they just announced Bertuzzi was signing a contract starting next season at $8M a year.

All you have to do is juggle with the numbers and all of a sudden it looks great. It's just a decent deal. I guess Brian Burke is thinking there is a good chance players will become unrestricted free agents sooner in the next CBA agreement.

$8M a year for Bertuzzi is good under the current CBA but I thought the goal was to LOWER salaries after the next CBA. Those terms have me becoming more and more pessimistic.

If a guy who usually plays hardball with players like Burke is willing to give Bertuzzi $8M, I think it doesn't bode well.

A salary cap at $35M?

Not. A. Chance.

We discussed this in some detail over on the canucks board. One thing to note is that Bertuzzi was probably going to make closer to 5.5 million this year under his old contract with bonuses (granted, there's probably some bonuses in his new one, but they'll certainly be harder to obtain and probably of less value). I know it's tempting to calculate this as a 3 year deal, but it really does make more sense to look at it as 4 years, 6.95 million per.
