yeah, the team was in desperate need of a change and they got it. Had Andy stayed, I am quite sure this team would have lost their last 13 games of the season (much like 11 straight to end the last season). This team stopped playing for him after 50-60 games in each of the last two seasons.
As many of you know, Andy Murray is great at getting 4th line grinders to overachieve. HOWEVER, he only hinders the development of skilled players, making them play the "system" - playing with the puck along the boards for 3 minutes with no shot or scoring chance only to have the other team clear the puck. That is not a system that should be used for the roster he has this season. Sure, last year, when the Kings had VERY LITTLE skill, that will keep the team in games. For talented teams like this year's Kings, that is not the type of hockey you play to win a large number of games.
It was time to make a coaching change. Murray is a good coach, and will definitely land on his feet. The problem was the players were tuning the coach out, and the Kings were not scoring. AM just wasnt working anymore. I have alot of respect for Andy Murray, and it also seems like he stood by his man, John Van Boxmeer (kings asst. coach) till the end. AM will land somewhere else. I don't doubt it.
I was hoping Panther fans out there could shed some light on John Torchetti. What kind of coach is he going to be? I would assume he is in a very interim position, and may be replaced at seasons end by a more seasoned head coach. But what kind of coach is he going to be? How does he handle special teams? Is he going to be a good new NHL coach, or is he more of an old NHL retread?
Big mistake by LA. It's not Murray's fault he was given a team that was built to succeed in the regular season - the first half of the regular season that is. Did you really think the goaltending duo of Garon and Labarbara was going to hold up forever? Too many smallish forwards. (They really miss Frolov).
Murray will have no problem finding work next year. He'll be the top prize on this summer's coaching carousel. An excellent tactician and strategist.
L.A. remained in playoff contention for much of 2003-04 only because of Andy Murray.
If the Kings players character is such a problem that they quit on their coach late in a season, then they won't have the character to succeed in the playoffs.
