That one is my favorite...

Haha and did you know this(I took from the History of Hockey board)

"In the mid-70s, the Islanders, who were in a cash crunch, reached an agreement with the Rangers to give them Denis Potvin in exchange for the Rangers waiving the Islanders territorial fees, but the NHL vetoed the deal"

We also chant...Beat your wife potvin, beat your wife...cause h beat his wife.
the hit was clean, but the skate was caught in a rut (the garden ice was horrible in the 70's and 80's) and the ankle broke.

It ruined our PO chances and we've never forgiven Potvin for it.

One of the most durable pieces of sports music isn't even a song. It's that 18-note ditty that ends with three claps or "Potvin sucks!" That charming little cry was born after New York Islanders defenseman Denis Potvin broke Rangers center Ulf Nilsson's ankle in 1979, and it has the half-life of plutonium. I was astounded to hear it in San Francisco's Pac-Bell Park (now SBC Park, Golden Fleece Fiduciary Field, or whatever its name of the week is now) during a Giants-Diamondbacks game two years ago. All you need are those 18 notes to activate it.
At the USA-Russia game in the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics, the tune was being played to excite the crowd. My son and I got up and screamed "Potvin Sucks" and we goit a few wierd looks and some scattered applause.

Some Rangers fans believe in their heart of hearts

that the hit was not on the level, but it was clean and Nilsson has stated as much himself.

The bottom line is that it was an Islanders player that did it and if the guy played for the Colorado Rockies at the time the chant would never have been heard of.

still it's funny. that chant along with the "Buy a Porsche Hextall, buy a Porsche" are some of the best cants i can remember.

Or

"Alan Arbour Beats his wide do-da, do-da
Alan Arbour beats his wife oh-do-do-da-day"

that was another classic chant.

great stuff.

I went to the Rangers game 2 Saturday nights ago in Montreal, and I was so happy to hear that whistling tune in the 1st, and a "POTVIN SUCKS" from the couple hundred or so Rangers fans there. Golden. If only the Rangers had won that night too...

If im not mistaken Islanders fans chant "the Rangers suck" to the tune of the chicken dance at the coliseum. The Rangers do not suck. They're in first place.

I heard that too on television, great to hear . There should be a pretty decent amount of Rangers fans tonight in Florida considering all of the New York transplants. Hopefully they do it extra loud considering that Potvin will be in the building...he is the Panthers analyst.

I've heard devils fans try to do the whistle followed by "Rangers suck" in the swamp, but Rangers fans drowned them out with the Potvin sucks. Potvin was good, but Greschner was better (and had a hotter wife!)

I've even heard them try to do what at least sounded like Potvin Sucks during a Devils-Islanders game...I just thought it was pathetic.

I think we should start to get more creative too. Keep Potvin sucks obviously. But game to game change things up, "Crosby is a baby, Crosby is a baby", etc. Kinda of like a college/high school game crowd would be fun. Or even just "[insert player] sucks"

"Proooo" for Prucha and "Henrik, Henrik" are nice too. This is the first year in a while I've heard different chants. I guess it's since we have something to cheer about.

"You can't beat us" was perfect last year too.

I still think, "make the playoffs" would be a good one for the Isles this year since thats what they chanted to us earlier in the year after we chanted "DP! DP!" for DiPietro (mocking them when we were up at the Colesium)
