2017 NHL Entry Draft

Less than two months to go, so I assume it's about time we start talking about this years draft.

Our first pick of the draft, assuming we hold on to it, will be somewhere between 28-31.

There are a few guys I wouldn't mind seeing us pick with our first two picks, and one of them is Jaret Anderson-Dolan. One of the youngest players in the draft, 5'11, 185lbs Center from Calgary who plays for Spokane Chiefs of the WHL and had 39+37+76 this season. Described as being an elite athlete and a hard worker. Risen through the rankings all year.

Has a fairly inspirational story as well.

Quote:
Scouting report

A hard-working versatile forward who can play a gritty or finesse game…skates extremely well and loves to get low and drive off his low center of gravity to burn around players…very balanced on his feet, enabling him to change direction with quick pivots…leans on his stick and is very good at protecting the puck from being stripped…plays a lot bigger than the listed size and is an absolute menace with the puck on his stick…does not hesitate to shoot the puck and has a good release with velocity that is likely to continue developing…great vision and is confident putting pucks through tight space to make a skilled pass…makes smart reads on puck movement…a constant factor when on the ice…defensive awareness is strong…constantly on his toes to play the routes of high probability with a waiting stick…is that heart and soul, all hustle player who attacks from the defensive side of the puck and can be relied upon in all zones…has the potential to become a strong pro middle six two-way player. (Future Considerations, November 2016)
Stylistically his game has drawn comparisons to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

Some other ones I'd like to see us draft; (stylistic comparison in brackets via lastwordonhockeyprospects.com)

Isaac Ratcliffe (Wayne Simmonds)
Matthew Strome (Shane Doan)
Grant Mismash (Brandon Saad)
Marcus Davidsson (Alex Steen)
Kole Lind (Max Pacioretty)

It is a crappy draft this year I would be happy with a bunch of trade outs and pick up picks for next year. Most drafts past the 15th pick are crapshoots but this one is after the 3rd pick.
And it is such a late pick now it is hard to know who will be available at 28, 30 or 31. We can't pick 29th BTW. I am hoping to pick 31st each round myself.

And we prob are not going to have a 1st or a 2nd. Trade it to LV to take Smitty.

I was hoping the Predators would have called up Wacey Rabbit when he was in Milwaukee just for the marketing.

I would have bought the **** out of that jersey. As for the draft, not really thinking about it. I fully assume that the pick goes to Vegas to take Smith.

I hope we reach slightly and take Robert Thomas.

This draft really isn't bad. The top end isn't as crazy strong as the past several seasons have been, and there are more project type players, but there will be several really solid NHL players taken, and in 5-6 years when "2017 Redraft" threads pop up, it's going to look waaaay different than what actually happens.

I saw us getting Yamamoto in a mock draft, which I would totally be on board for.

Yamamoto would be cool if he can get bulked up to 180-185. Otherwise I'd really worry about longevity.

How about this kid he should be available for 29-31 range if he wont get drafted before preds makes their selection.

Versatile forward can play C and RW.

well, LWOS said he plays a lot like Arvidsson so I wouldn't mind picking him up.

Am I the only one who isn't really paying much attention to our first round pick because I'm almost assuming we trade it?

I'd there's a year to trade, this is it. Low pick in a weaker draft.

Anyone the Preds are picking at 30 will be projected to top out as a third liner. Obviously some gems will emerge, but there's no way to know right now, and if the pick can help bring a 2C, do it!

Here's a name that would be interesting at 30... Jaret Anderson-Dolan of the Spokane Chiefs.

Captained Canada's U18 team.

Strong two-way game

Good acceleration. (still needs a small bit of work on overall skating though)

Only 17, so plenty of room for growth and development.

Video reminds me of another former Chief who came through the same coach and system, Tyler Johnson of the Lightning. Except that Dolan is bigger and stronger which should lend itself to better durability.

This seems like a defenseman pick. It is where we excel and we are low in the draft

The pipeline is VERY light in forwards but I'm not a fan of diluting the talent pool with this draft. If anything, unless Poile and co. know of any Euro sleepers then ehhhhhhh.....I would love to see a couple more LHD prospects and forwards.

Hopefully we don't draft anyone. Hopefully we trade the pick.

One player worth keeping an eye on is Urho Vaakanainen. LHD starting his third season in the FEL. Next season he is going to get a big role and has a chance to really develop. He skates well and plays a solid game at both ends of the ice.

If he is available and we are keeping our 1st pick I think he really would solidify our situation on the pipeline.

LHD: Girard, Vaakanainen
RHD: Fabbro, Carrier, Allard

I think even without him our pipeline is pretty solid. Fabbro will be a top 4 guy and I have a feeling Carrier could potentially reach that level too.

I'd go offense if we get the chance.

So it appears that we've kept our draft picks unless there's a trade made today or tomorrow.

Again, I'm hoping for a forward...

Robert Thomas - Probably gone before we pick, he's rising and could even go in the top-10 if a GM gets really bold.

Jaret Anderson-Dolan - Projected as an early second rounder, so taking him at 30 would be okay, or trade back a few spots.

Shane Bowers - Doesn't have the upside that the others have, but seems like a guy Poile might take.

Otherwise there's a chance that a defenseman like Brannstrom slips to us, he's consistently compared to Kimmo Timonen.

Or even goalie Jake Oettinger. Best keeper available, compared in style to Carey Price. If he's available and Poile isn't feeling confident in Saros as the long-term starter, this could be a possibility. However, we know Poile has not had success taking goalies early, so he might pass.

No to taking a goalie that high. We'll probably draft forward this year as we usually switch every year, I like what I've heard about Anderson-Dolan.
