Great news wth my morning coffee

Looking forward to Penticton even more now
Yeah, even if he's the next Teppo he's going to need to get some experience on the small NA ice. He can't have played on it much at all.

I don't know what they pay in Liiga, but with his ELC signing bonus + AHL salary + a week or two called up early or late in the season, that has to be a nice payday for him if money's an issue.

Pretty sure the Liiga pays pretty well actually and by pretty well I mean better or at least on PAR with the AHL

He has been listed as 6'0, 176lbs since his draft -1 season but I'd say that's pretty close to correct.

Not quite on par but I'm pretty sure he was talking about style and system, plus being acquainted to the dimensions, of the small ice.

Liiga is more similar to AHL than SHL or KHL stylistically but it's still the big ice.

Great news. Jets are due for a true late round steal. Hopefully Niku will be ours. Imagine getting a Top 4 defender out him? Being overly optimistic here because why the hell not lol.

Sami has been my favorite dark horse for a while and hopefully he has a decent season with the Moose (if that's where he lands). I think he and Nogier could make a decent pair. Both can skate and move the puck hopefully Nelson can suppress and Sami can generate. I assume Poolman may start with the Moose and although that would be a green group at least they are upgrading the talent level.

I know you like him as much as I like poolman. Maybe we can sit at a moose game together and watch them play better than jets bottom pair next year

Top 15 offensively among defencemen in Liiga, may as well be optimistic

Had to edit my quote to add among defencemen, and I believe there are 15 teams? Or 20? It's not very many

Tops or right up there in U23 scoring as well, or at least he was earlier in the year.

The news literally came within minutes of me arriving to Jyväskylä. Spooky.

That 2015 draft looks beautiful for us.

I am sure some of the finnish posters can give you a good report but my small takes on seeing him are skilled smooth skating D with good offensive instincts. Will have to adjust to the smaller ice surface and play a more controlled game defensively.

He was one of those guys that dropped in his draft year and I really think we got a solid later round pick here. He was someone who I thought was going to go in the 2nd round. Really if he can come here and adjust to the physical aspects of the defensive side of the North American game here, skies the limit.

Sounds like a plan.......we may need extra beer money in case they suck and we have to drink them up to a respectable level.

I really like his game since it's tough to get his skill level in the later rounds. The one cause for concern I had was that pesky hockey prospects radio interview Chevy did where he fell short of being positive enough on his praise of Niku and mentioned something to the extent of "Sami is so poised-relaxed with the puck that one minute he dazzled our scouts and the next minute he could drive them crazy (Chevy said it in an chuckling light hearted fashion but still)?

Either way at the end of the day if you watch the highlights or even shift by shift compilation you can see he is a very smooth skilled D man and we are not exactly overflowing with skill in our D prospect pool. Niku is just entering his draft +3 season which is the same year that Morrissey joined the Moose so we have time to work with Niku and lord knows with our terrible D core on the Moose he should get a chance to play big minutes.

Fantastic news. I had been hounding the Jets about signing Niku and Spacek in the prospects thread. My Sip-fu is strong

Also interesting:

Quote:
Sami Niku on a three-year entry-level contract with an annual value of $916,700
That's pretty high for an ELC for a 7th round pick, that's close to what a lot of 2nd rounders (and some 1st rounders) make. For comparison Petan and Comrie are making $863,333 and $902,500 respectively. Good for Chipman for not nickel and diming on this.

I don't think he is coming back. He will be in the AHL next season

Yea we will know it's bad if we don't care about the re-entry policy during the game.

He is basically a clone of Markus Nutivaara. Labelled as an offensive dman, but improved steadily his defensive game in the FEL. Excellent pick in the 7th round, congrats.
