The added Hudson Fasching last summer? Glad to see Cullen doing his homework.

I'd prefer a longer term solution to the D then Trevor Daley. We need to find a top 4 LHD 25/26 years old or younger. Someone who will still be effective 3-4 years from now when we are (hopefully) competing for cups. Daley in 3-4 years will be in his late 30s and won't be helping at that age. And it's not like he is a bonafide top end dman as it is.

And I don't see the need to add Nick Bonino. We already have RoR, Eichel, Reinhart, Larsson, Girgensons, ERod and Ennis as players who play or have played center. Obviously Ennis is a winger at this point of his career and a bad one at that, ERod is not a natural center and Girgs is best suited at wing imo but even still we are set down the middle for the next decade.

Has this guy ever watched a Sabres game? eek

He's right about Risto getting overrated though. The fancy stats don't lie.

Ahahahah Ristolainen in the "Zeroes" category is grand.

While he slams Risto for his bad metrics, no mention of Reinhart's huh? "Complementary piece" my ass

I mean he's gotta write 31 of these, so yeah it's a bit stat sheet heavy analysis.

What's the point of writing these if your basis is strictly stat-sheet driven? I understand one needs to be written for every team, but it doesn't seem to be well thought out.

He called Reinhart a complimentary piece and will not be a star. The author completely ignored that Reinhart hasn't even been playing his natural position for the better part of two seasons.

Also, Botterill said the team needs heavy forecheckers to get guys like Eichel the puck. Yet the Sabres are leaving their top prospect in that regard exposed?

The Risto stuff is correct no matter how much people want to deny it but unlike guys like Staal or Girardi who are just terrible I want to see Risto under a good system before I say it's just the player he's going to be. Still it's been three seasons in a row where he's been a terrible player defensively.

How many years did they give Campbell before he started to turn into a passable player in his own zone? Seven pro years?

Took a while but Campbell was a bit of a project and has twice the skating ability that Risto has which is what he generally used to escape trouble. I think Risto's main problem which is gap control and on ice dictating are both coach able issues. Some of his other issues like losing track of the puck far too often not so much. That's an issue he's going to have to fix himself with better anticipation.

Ristolainen is so weird. I rarely complain about him during games but his advanced stats are so poor.

Does anyone here actually consistently see Ristolainen struggling? I don't. Even with his usage.

Botterill did say lowering Ristolainen's minutes is his plan. Ristolainen at 21 minutes a game should really improve his advanced stats IMO. He had been used like the best defenseman in the NHL. He isn't there yet.

Risto is weird -- you're right he's hardly ever not looking the part of a 1d. His gap control and positioning is a bit off at times. Those are more difficult to spot on TV with limited replays. That's why he looks good but gets pounded in his own zone. Risto also puts up a good amount of points so sometimes we ignore the corsi.

That's why Buffalos #1 need is a true shutdown D man. The he good thing is that they don't need to be offensively gifted, just a shutdown defenseman. Botterill said Risto is a very good top 4 defenseman for a reason,
-- he hasn't shown that he can be elite defensely yet.

"TRADE MARKET
Evander Kane, Tyler Ennis, Matt Moulson, Zemgus Girgensons"

This trade block fetches back between zero and jack *****.

No thanks on Daley. Wouldn't mind The Chad or Bonino over here. The Risto assessment is shockingly bad, the rest is about right IMO.

Who is Casey DeSmith and why are we spending any amount of dollars on him?

Trade Kane for defense and send Moulson and Ennis to Siberia.

The thing about Risto is it's hard to ever really blame him in particular on a play. When he gets beat usually he's the third of two other dunces getting beat hard and he isn't able to compensate for that. He eats all the tough minutes, which makes it look worse. On a better team in a better system I'd hope a lot of the problems go away, we just have to hope he hasn't gained any bad habits he can't kick after doing this for so long.

He had them signing Chad as a UFA this summer. That is his projected lineup.

Literally every coach who utilized their #1 defenseman like Risto was fired. Bylsma was the only one who finished the season. But he's bad because spreadsheets.
