I think Draisaitl is centering the 2nd line come next year. Him and 97 were put on different lines and we looked far more dangerous. Fine to put them out together when you desperately need a goal a la Crosby/Malkin, but I think having those two threats on separate lines is ideal.

The question becomes what can you get for RNH? I'm all for trading him for a defenceman like Dumba. Dumba does some silly things, but you can't deny his offensive potential. You need to take risks on players like him.

Bonino is a great 3rd line center. He wouldn't be worth the significant overpay though and if he decides to sign for a reasonable market value and term, I imagine that will be with the Penguins.

Chicago should just trade Toews. There will be a market for him and it would work out in their favour long term to trade him now for picks/prospects.

There will be? Not unless Chicago retains some portion of his cap hit, at which point they may as well just hold onto him.

Then again, next year could be our best chance at chasing a Cup with McDavid still being on his ELC. Our top4 with Sekera healthy would be true Cup caliber:

Klefbom-Larsson
Sekera-Hjalmarsson

You could probably play Nurse in that 2nd pairing role with Hjalmarsson until Sekera is back. His veteran presence would really help Nurse's game I think. That way we wouldn't have to commit to Russell either, which is nice. Man...now I really want Hjalmarsson.

I think he would definitely consider being moved here. Having Klefbom and Larsson probably helps a lot. And our little playoff run this year probably helped a lot too, as it showed we're very capable of winning a Cup in the near future. Then there's McDavid of course...
A Hjalmarsson ad would be very similar to the Bruins adding Seidenberg way back when. I think he makes a lot of sense for us and we make a lot of sense for them a well if they're looking for younger, cheaper emerging defensemen. I don't even think we'd have to pay with Darnell to be honest. Reinhart probably fits that mold better.

I don't think it's likely, but its certainly interesting.

The market for him and where he might want to go have likely very little intersection. Maybe Winnipeg if he wants to go home. Trouba and picks/prospects??????

I mean personally for Draisaitl yes he played far and away his best hockey in that series on his own line.

I have my doubts his model girlfriend/fiancee wants to live in Winnipeg.

The places where he wants to go don't have the cap space for him, the places who do have the cap space for him wouldn't be appealing to either him or his significant other.

I believe so. And even if it isn't, what choice do we have? RNH has shown he isn't capable of providing offence and running his own line. Draisaitl has shown he is.

We can't stack our top line and have the other three floundering. That's what will happen unfortunately.

We have the ability to create a Crosby/Malkin dynamic here. Something similar, at least. I think that is the best way forward.

As for Bonino, I'd rather go after Jarnkrok - better contract.

Bonino for me is a guy you add for 3M max, and 4 years max. Would rather go with someone like Jarnkrok who's signed long term at a very nice 2M AAV.
Pretty sure Nashville will protect Jarnkrok

At least E3 is something to pay attention to this week while all the false rumours float around.

Pretty sure they'd protect Subban,Ellis, Josi, Ekholm, Johansson, Arvidsson, Forsberg, and Neal before Jarnkrok. Neil looks like the only possible option to swap out with Jarnkrok to me.

Their top-4 defense forces them to go 4-4-1, which means they can only protect Johansen, Forsberg, Arvidsson, and one of their other forwards like Neal, Jarnkrok, Smith, etc...

I'd love to do a #22 + #84 for #29 + #39 trade with Dallas. With the late first we have a good shot at one of Jokiharju/Timmins or a strong C like Dolan/Chytil. With #39 there will be some good wingers available imo.

I would protect Jarnkrok, trade Neal to the highest bidder and loose either Smith or Wilson to expansion

I would too if he shot right and not left. Our other PP personnel makes having a RH finisher a priority.

Would be a bit complicated, but:

To NSH:

Eberle and Reinhart

To EDM:

Neal

To LV:

NSH 2nd round pick, EDM 2nd round pick in 2018, agree to take Reinhart from NSH and Pouliot from EDM in ED

Players aren't lining up to play for any of those teams . They were almost all built on drafted players and a smart GM making smart deals and smart cost effective signings. Seriously, look at the Pens team. Who were the high end players who signed there as free agents?

Ditto for Washington or LA. The Caps have signed free agents, but just like the Oilers, and every other team outside of the Blackhawks, needed to pay top dollar and term for them.
