So the next Ranger to wear the "C" will be the franchise's 25th Captain...or 24th individual to have that honor (#11 wore it twice.)

Jagr doesn't want it. No reason to force it on him. I wouldn't mind Kaspar with the C. Ortmeyer or Helminen could both be future captains.

As much as Ortmeyer hustles and gives up his body for shots, I really wouldn't want him as our captain. He is a great role player but thats about it. I think we had a thread before debating how good Ortmeyer really is, and the consensus was he was a great hustle energy player, but not irreplaceable. I dont think he'd be much of a captain.

I like the system as it is now, I really don't see a huge leader on the team. Kaspar is a fun guy in the locker room but I dont envision him as a leader, if we had to give it to anyone it should be Ruccin, but he will probably not be back anymore.

Minnesota used to do the captaincy on a rotating basis (last season, at least). I'm not sure if they still do..

I don't think it's awful at all. The greatest captain ever just retired, and we are in rebuild mode. Let a captain emerge, don't just hand it to someone.

Actually Rule 14 requires that "one Captain shall be appointed by each Team." However, the rules don't state any penalty for not having a captain. They do say "Only when the captain is not in uniform, the Coach shall have the right to designate three Alternate Captains. This must be done prior to the start of the game." So I guess that a team can just say that their captain is not in uniform and therefore choose to appoint 3 alternates.

while that is true...i'm not so sure you could tell that to the officials. i'm pretty sure the point of the rule is for each team to appoint one of their current players as the Captain.

I don't care what the officials say. He's up there, just look.

If Jags doesn't want the captaincy, I'd like Kaspar to take the role.

That is if we had to appoint a captain; we're fine the way we are.

I think the only other teams without a named captain in the NHL are Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Boston, New Jersey and Tampa Bay...

I remeber that Jags didn't want it at the start of the season. But, things are different now. From what I've seen on the ice and in interviews, he is the leader of this team. I think if offered it for the postseason, he'd accept.

One omission to the list -- Anders Hedberg wore the "C" for a period of time in the 80's when Beck was hurt on a long term basis.
