BOSTON - Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced today, June 13, that the team has hired Kevin Dean as an assistant coach of the Boston Bruins.
So who's coaching Providence now?

Great move, especially since Dean has had time with a lot of the young kids looking to take their shot at cracking the NHL lineup.

I hope they grab Nate Leaman from the Friars for the P-Bruins head coaching spot.

He might find himself as the head coach quite soon.

I think he replaces Cassidy's assistant coach position once he ( Cassidy ) became the head coach.

Oh yeah, forgot about that. I'd still like to see Savvy join the team and help with the offense and PP.

IMO, I don't know how Savard can help. I'm sure he has some tips, but I question his experience, seeing as he's only coached lightly at the Bantam level. Besides, I don't think offensively the Bruins are in a bad place, especially on the PP. We are coming off back to back 7th place finished in PP percentage.

Gavin Lee of Prohockey added this piece of info in his reporting the promotion for Dean.

"There is no word on who will take over as head coach of the Providence Bruins, and try to follow up on the 43-23-10 season that Dean led them to this year."

I wonder if this might mean that the plan is to have some of the kids (e.g., Debrusk, Heinen, Cehlarik and O'Gara) play in Boston next season.

Cassidy has experience with them as well...both he and Dean worked down in Providence together for half a decade. If the kids are ready, they'll be familiar with the coaches, which is a big step.

This is great for the kids that spent some time in Providence. I also thinkhe did a good job trying to get the youts experience while still promoting winning.

Never seen a HF thread so positive before, I'm honestly a little scared

Don't worry, I'll bring a little negativity to help even it out.

I'm sure Dean will be fine up in Boston, but I wish they had let him stay down in Providence for as long as they could get away with. As others have mentioned, he seemed to bring a good balance to developing and winning, which is perfect for an AHL coach. Given the state of the Boston team now and for the future, the development of the kids on the Providence team is going to be big deal moving forward.

With the players already there (Debrusk, Heinen, O'Gara) and all the new guys coming in over the next few years (Bjork, JFK, Lauzon, Senyshyn, Zboril, Gabrielle, Frederic, Lindgren, etc), I don't think it's a stretch to say this is going to be one of the most important developmental times in this team's recent history. I have no idea who they might be considering outside of the aforementioned Leach and Whitfield, but it seems risky to put what is ultimately the big club's future in the hands of an unknown. It seemed like they had a good thing going down there with Dean, so I just wonder if him being up with Boston is the best utilization for him in the organization.

Yup. Leach was already an interim head coach at Scranton Wilkes Barre when Sullivan moved up last season. I think the plan all along was to give him the head job at some point.

Sorry to see Dean go so soon but good on the promotion. Really seemed like a sharp guy with an even keeled attitude which was good for this team.

likely 6 decades ago,or it's never happened or it's been prohibited with a tweak of the bylaws as the years progressed.....

it's not like the ECHL has 1 employee doing two roles, as many of them do today, (you have to remember the E, IS 5 DECADES behind the 2 leagues they feed into.....

I barely recall the era where you can add players in season from Europe, and poof... there went that agreement out the window.

You mean a player/head coach? Great question. Ages.

But player/assistant coach was still a designation until a handful of years ago. It was a backdoor way to slip another vet on your roster. Mike Keane played and assisted with the Manitoba Moose until the late 2000's and so did Craig Berube in Philly.

The last player/assistant in Providence was Bill Armstrong in 98-99 under Laviolette. Rod Langway's last pro games were in Providence as a player/assistant under Tom McVie. And Laviolette played under Bob Francis in the same capacity in 1995 and 96.
