OT: MLB to allow nicknames and personal touches for Players Weekend

http://www.ksdk.com/mobile/article/s...d/51-449082970

MLB is relaxing uniform rules for one weekend. Players will be able to put a nickname (with caveat that league won't approve lewd or other inappropriate ones) on the back of their jerseys.

Players will also be able to use neon laces, batting gloves, etc.

Jerseys from the weekend will be sold for charity.

Will be interesting to see how this is received by the fans (as obviously the players pushed for it). And perhaps might lead to a relaxing of other rules down the road.

Seems like a logical step.

Seriously though, what? Players putting nicknames on jersey for charity = ads?

This is part of baseballs attempt to perhaps attract a younger audience, and an "urban" audience by encouraging the idiotic and garish. This isn't the XFL. If you're putting a name on the back of a uniform, it's a last name. PERIOD.

And I'm sick of looking at neon. Too bright and distracting.

Ichiro shouldn't be allowed to use Ichiro then.

Just saying.

No he should not have been. It was ridiculous. His last name is Suzuki and that's what should've gone on the jersey

It's kind of silly to get bent out of shape over it. If it makes you feel better, just imagine it went like this:

Ichiro: "Can I out Ichiro on the back of my jersey?"
MLB: "No, our policy is family name on the back of the jersey. Is Suzuki your family name?"
Ichiro: "My family name is イチロー. I'll just have Seattle use that."
MLB: "Uh, Ichiro is fine.

His family name is Suzuki. Since this is America and not Japan, it's spelled in English on the back of his jersey, not what ever chicken scratch that is.

I understand they made an exception for him, and Vida Blue before him. It's not a huge deal, but I would like for the MLB to stand its ground and preserve it's traditions.

Keith Olbermann is a sad human being who I believe may be deranged or mentally ill if you listen to some of his rants. Olbermann looks almost dangerously unstable with his radical rants and delusions and hysteria.

I don't care about what your opinion is of the man. Skip three minutes in, if you're at all interested in this topic.

He does a good job, showing pictures of all the different times this has happened over the years.

I do not understand grown men having opinions on the words on the back of people's jerseys

I mean, like, there is stuff happening in the world.

But you understand grown men having opinions on strangers pushing a piece of rubber on ice?

False dichotomy.

You can have an opinion on this, and also have an opinion on everything else in the world.

If Montreal rejoins the league, should names on jerseys there be spelled according to French spellings? What about a potential team in Mexico? Also, news to me that Toronto is in America.....

Huh?

Both those languages use the same characters. You already have players with Spanish accents on their uniforms.

Yeah I meant accents. Those don't exist in English. Why is the line drawn just to rule out other alphabets
