If you could change 1 thing about todays NHL...

What would it be? And lets try to keep it realistic..

I may have had too many wobbly pops, but I kinda like the idea of widening the blue/red lines to increase the size of all three zones.(even though it looks kinda funny)
I gotta say that the 1 thing I would change is the stupid "loser" point. I say you lose in OT, you don't deserve anything.:moon:
I am a old school kinda guy and I don't think anything too radical is needed, but like to hear what the rest of ya think...

I would give an extra point if a team scores 4 goals or more. That way, you'll get an open game without making the game stupid.

I'm a proponent of the theory that the rink, while remaining the same size physically, is actually smaller now due to the increased size and speed of modern NHL players. I think the ice dimensions should be enlarged somewhat (doesn't necessarily have to be as large as say olympic ice) to try and make the "relative dimensions" of the game more similar to where they were before.

I'd outlaw non-wood sticks and make goalies wear smaller equipment....

That's a solid idea.

That's the most interesting solution. Instead of those 4th line pluggers who can't skate teams would have no choice but to dress more talented players.

But is it realistic to believe NHL teams would take out some seats and pay big money to put those changes in place ? How much would it cost to do that ?

A few feet could expose some of those guys who thrive with the new defensive systems but would otherwise have a lot of difficulty. A quick exemple being Therrien with the flyers (even though he is a dman). I think we could be surprised at how a few feet could help out guys like Oleg Petrov be a whole lot more effective.

But main effect still is to give more place for our small speedsters like Samsonov, Koivu and St-Louis.

All of the players would have to be hot women in thongs and the ice would have to be changed to whip cream and the skates would have to be changed into those do me kind of heels and I would have to be the leagues only ref!

Oh, you said one change. Then make whoever wins a fight get a goal awarded to thier team but only during overtime. That would sure make the last few mins of every game interesting.

Definitely bigger ice, but that boat sailed about 10 years ago when the new rinks were all built.

Take out every rule change that was instituted in the mid to late 80s whose sole purpose was to limit offensive production.

Or conversely call every single penalty black and white as it is written in the rule book. After a month of power play festivals watch the clutching and grabbing disappear.

No instigator rule.
Either no overtime or continuous 5 on 5 with no point for the loser.
Maybe slightly wider ice, dunno.
Some fiddling with two-line passing?

I'm just glad no one mentioned shootouts yet.

Not necessarily. They could just allow bigger rinks, but not require them. this way, the teams who are able to could increase the size a bit, and the others leave them as it is.

Another one: no more coincidental minors and other such nonsense. Instead of arbitrarily making the game 4 on 4 all the time, just give more possibility for 4 on 4 play when the game is getting chippy. Hell, you could go really extreme: get rid of the instigator, and when both guys go for 5 minutes, we play 5 minutes of 4 on 4.

I guess I'd try the no redline idea. Less whistles and hopefully more goals.

Lose the bad markets.

Ax Nashville, Atlanta, Tampa, Florida, Anaheim, Carolina, Phoenix and New Jersey.

22 team league, that would get rid of a lot of lower skill players and hopefully lead to more scoring and a higher level of hockey.

Not that your point is at all incorrect, but the Mike Peluso playing now is actually a different Mike Peluso than the goon who used to play for the Blackhawks.
