I'm Canadian, but I just got back from spending Christmas vacation in Norway. I had not been there in 10 years.
I feel hockey in Norway has a long way to go in terms of acclimatizing itself to Norwegian culture. Here are a few reasons...
1) Minimal access to rinks. I thought there would be more outdoor rinks set up... especially in Oslo where people play Bandy as well.
2) Everyone I met in Norway seems to be more driven to play sports individually. Of course this is stereo-typing (and it has not gone unnoticed that the Norsk handball team won the world championships when I was there). However, there seems to be many more people in Norway than in Canada per capita that are really in their element when they are on a ski trip, fjell tour, etc.
3) non-traditionality of hockey. As obvious of a point as this is, it seemed really interesting for me to watch TV there. I saw many sports on TV that are never shown on TV in Canada (unless its during the Olympics): biathalon, slalom, ski jumping...Also, i went to the World Stars game against the select team from norgeseliteserien and the NHL stars absolutely boored the entire crowd to tears.
