Geisser appears to be under contract to his Swiss team for the next two years.

That would explain why he dropped so much based off Mckenzie's rankings

Again, he was an HM (94-100) so it was a bit lower but not terribly much. ISS had him at 119. He wasn't among McKeen's top 125.

We're like way over 50% drafting D the last few years, no?

Our under 20 team had a weak and small defense with Karrer/Siegenthaler playing crazy minutes and one of the best ones (Gross) being an underager. I think McKenzie was relatively high on Geisser because he made the team and offers good size.
I'm not impressed so far but having said that, big defenders often need time. So you never know. 4th rounders not often turn into NHL players so he may be worth a try.

However, that is not the pick I would make. As unlikely as it is, I would draft MODO defenseman Sebastian Walfridsson. The Swede defender is almost an after thought in this draft. Most scouting outfits have him in the high 100s, low 200s. But ISS has him #67. Whyhockey has him ranked 46, and I’ve seen a few more scouts peg him for 3rd or 4th round selection. It only takes one team to grab him, and without a 4th round-the Panthers could use the 66th pick to draft him.

Why doesn’t anyone notice Walfridsson? Look at his point totals. They are minuscule, even by Swedish junior league defender standards. Defenders who don’t produce points, especially in the CHL where most N. American scouts pay attention, usually never make it through to the NHL. And that is why teams aren’t interested much in Walfridsson. However, watching the kid play–his tools are real and valuable to an NHL team.

Sebastian Walfridsson so under-rated imo. Love the angles he takes and he contains. Nothing fancy in his game but moves well and reliable.

— Brayden Sullivan (@SullyDraftGeek) June 3, 2017

He skates exceeding well, he moves the puck quickly, and manages the game. Watching him in the SuperElit this year, Walfridsson was a perfect teammate and partner. It was smart play after smart play, quietly off the ice. Go back, get the puck, take a stride or two, move it to teammates tape. Rinse, repeat. In terms of style, Walfridsson looked like Jake Muzzin, or Anton Stralman. He’s a set-the-table type defenseman who is best to pair with a Drew Doughty or Aaron Ekblad carry the mail, offensive and aggressive right handed defenseman.

Maybe 66 is too early for him, maybe it is not. But I really wanted to go to bat for Walfridsson as I think he’s a great fit in Florida with what they are trying to build. It’s also time to start rebuilding the defensive prospect ranks and Walfridsson is one more chip in that direction. With a backlog of puck carrying defenseman, you need these types of defenders to balance.

Sebastian Walfridsson – I liked what I saw from the 6-0 blueliner in Slovakia – plays a smart, steady game..good puck mover, good mobility. Not a bruiser or especially hard, but good positioning, decent stick, and poise. At this point in this draft he looks like a top-60 candidate.
Ranked 67th by ISS.

Sounds like a smaller Alzner pre-groin injury.

"(Benton Maass) is strong and poised and was able to create with the puck." Neutral Zone

"He has excellent mobility and some offensive upside. Sees the ice very well and is good at getting his shot through from the point." George Ross, Scout for Spokane Chiefs (WHL)

"I think we’ve got two of the best defensemen in the state coming back in Benton Maass and Nick Perbix (St. Cloud State commit)." Ben Gustafson, Head Coach, Elks River, Minnesota High School

You guys should consider Roger Karrer. Him and Siegenthaler played epic minutes for the under 20 team. Very underrated shutdown defender. Rather small but plays big. Decent skillset and skater.

The amount of defenders we drafted is like a meme at this point. It is pretty crazy we've got Vrana as a high upside forward and that's about it...

Continue to take BPA. Always flip D for F's if need be.

My issue is it seems like people in the FO have soured on Vrana, so that makes him our best trade chip. If we trade him we have literally zero coming up from the forward ranks and none of our D (outside Bowey and maybe Johanssen) have any real value yet.

Top shelf name.

Hopefully they bring in some decent CHL signing options next week.
