Seems that avs are stacking russian players nowdays, hope that in few years we will see some of these guys dominating at WC(ie. Panarin, shipachyov, dadonov, gusev) and then joining our ranks.

Had a really good year at penn state. Is he a top six or bust?

Had a stellar freshman season at Penn State. This seems like another excellent late draft gamble especially if he can tune up the skating.

From Caser:

14. Denis Smirnov (LW/RW; 5'10" 185 lbs; Penn State Univ., NCAA; 2 year overage)

Smirnov sees the ice well and got very good hands, not to mention his production in the NCAA this season, but his size is an issue and also he really could be a better skater for his size. Obvious candidate for Smirnov would be Pittsburgh (they got some picks in the 5th), because it's Penn State, you know.

Yeah, he doesn't have the skill set to be a bottom 6 guy.

I think I remember reading something about this kid at some point. Thought he'd go higher, but with his size I can see why he fell. Let's hope we have our own Gaudreau now.

Probably my favourite pick of the draft; guys we just got a steal here. Granted he is probably a boom or bust top 6 player, picture someone like Sven Andreghetto and Hurricane's prospect Sergey Tolchinski.

Extremely talented and wonderful skater. Possesses absurd amount of hockey IQ and elusiveness due to his stickhandling. A player that is always notable, but in a good way. I would consider him more of a powerplay specialist, but is a fantastic playmaker and has a very underrated shot.

Extremely happy Avs decided to give this lad a shot.

I like it, gives us a chance to let him develop in the NCAA before bringing him over the AHL.

Much as the mere sight of anything related to Penn State makes my skin crawl, that's good to see.

Do we have two or four years to sign him? With his age I'm not sure, I think it's two.

I think until he graduates but I'm not completely sure either.

2 years or 30 days after he leaves college, the later of the two.

BTW, there's no way Smirnov is 5'10". More like 5'9" or maybe even a high 5'8."

At the draft introductions, Makar was standing next to him and he's at least 2-3" taller, and was measured at 5' 11.25" at the combine. Leiverman was standing on the other side of him and looked at least an inch taller, and he's listed at 5'10" himself.

I've been told he is 5'9.5" when he measures at Penn State. They just round up to the flat 5'10".

It's always interesting when it comes to listed heights for hockey players. Theo Fleury has always been listed as 5'6", but a friend of mine who met him on his book tour says that's only accurate if they measured him when he was in skates.

It's possible. Looking at Makar and Leiverman next to him though, I think that might be a bit generous as well.

Theo would have a hard time getting on the Roller Coaster at The Stampede. No way is he 5'6.
