2018 NHL Entry Draft Thread

The 2017 draft is old enough already. Time to move on to other things. Remember "new is always better" - Barney Stinson.

So, obviously, the top of the draft is much stronger than this year. I rarely rank defensemen first overall but Dahlin deserves it. By far, the top D prospect in a very long time. However, Svechnikov has all the skills in the world to take a good run at 1st overall. He has already declared he'd go to the CHL next year. Next wednesday, Barrie will have the chance to draft him.

After that, there's some really good players in the top-10 already. Farabee was excellent this year for the USNTDP and at the U18. McShane I think will be a riser throughout the year. Dobson is a complete dman with very good offensive potential. Solid draft in perspective for the Q, several quality prospects, unlike this year.

I think all 3 of Ylönen, Kotkaniemi, and Kupari will be 1st rounders. Whatever Finland is doing, it's working.

As it stands right now, I believe this is what our 2018 draft picks look like...

1st round: Habs pick (1)
2nd round: Habs pick, Chicago pick, Washington pick (3)
3rd round: Habs pick (1)
4th round: None -- Habs pick went to LA for King (0)
5th round: Habs pick (1)
6th round: None -- Habs pick went to Detroit for Ott (0)
7th round: None -- Habs pick went to Philly for 2017 #199 pick - Primeau (0)

Conditional: If Sergachev plays 40 or less games (including playoffs), TB gets Habs 2nd and Habs get TB's 6th.

As of today (June 24th), we have 6 draft picks in 2018. We need to hope for Sergachev to have a good season as well as good health.

Cool name from that list.

"Veleno" translates from the Italian, to "poison" or "venom".

Joe Venom or Joe Poison. How cool is that.

You say Dahlin is the top D prospect in a long time. Would you say since Ekblad, or would you rank him as even better than Ekblad was in his draft year?

Better than Ekblad for sure. I liked Ekblad, big kid with a big shot from the blueline and good head for the game but Dahlin's mobility, hands and creativity are well above. He has the potential to be the top offensive player from the blueline as well as being a top defender.

Just a few highlights. Just tell yourself those plays happened in the SHL, Sweden's top pro league, and that the kid is 16 years old.

would 1 for 1 trade Shea Weber for Dahlin. My favorite prospect in years.

Realistically I hope we get Jared McIsaac

Dahlin is absolutely incredible. I'll be watching a lot of Frölunda this year to keep an eye on Ikonen, but I suspect it will be the Dahlin show most of the time.

The three big finns impressed the hell out of me at the U18's, but another kid who also stood out was Milos Roman. I wonder where he'll be playing next year. Zadina outplayed Necas this year at the U18's pretty clearly.

Here's to hoping Sergachev plays 40 games and we have three 2nds and four picks in the top 60.

True, if Sergy doesn't play 40.. it's going to look like an awful lot to give up for a Radulov replacement

Filip Zadina is one to keep an eye on. Incredible hands. I think he shoots up the draft board.

There were talks of him going to the SHL with Lulea IIRC or even with Vancouver in the WHL. Highly doubt about the latter, but I don't know if some you guys have any idea if he's staying in the Extraliga for 17-18 !? He was trying to get out last season but hisclub prevented him to go to Sweden because they were not getting compansation. It's a deep draft talent wise, but I think Zadina moves into the top tier of the first round by the end of the year.

And Dahlin is indeed a future star. I have a feeling Detroit will tank in hope of landing their next Swedish superstar.

Please Habs start today adding 1st, 2nd & 3rd round choices to the 2018 draft selections we already have acquired. This with a package of roster & prospect players, could be enough to move up and draft Joseph Veleno(LHC), giving the Habs true depth through the middle. Galchenyuk hitting his prime, with Poehling & Veleno in two yrs. alongside Danault should be enough talent at center to battle teams like Edmonton, Calgary & Toronto whose depth will be hard to match.
