My worst fear would be seeing 2 stud LHD like Dahlen and McIsaac going in the top 3 and then drafting at 4 or 5.

You know that's exactly what will happen.

Lets just hope that Quinton Hughes really hits a growth spurt over the summer. Then it wouldn't be as bad but given our recent history, that really is one of the more likely scenarios to say the least...

It'll most likely happen.

Also to clarify I don't mean I'd draft McIsaac over Dahlin, it's just unrealistic to expect getting a top-2 pick next year is all, so guys like McIsaac and Hughes would be more realistic to get my hopes up for.

Also because McIsaac is my next year's Heiskanen. I just love 2-way D who can skate and have great IQ at both ends of the ice.

I don't think you know 2018 that well.

The draft is defencemen heavy. Of course no one comes close to Dahlin, while McIsaac is quite overrated on HFB.

- Bode Wilde
- Quinton Hughes (my personal favourite, picture a better/smarter Makar)
- Ryan Merkley
- Evan Bouchard
- Ty Smith
- Adam Boqvist
- Calen Addison
- Ty Emberson
- Jett Woo
- K’Andre Miller
- Matthias Samuelsson
- Xavier Bouchard

A lot of these guys are way better than majority of the defenders who were taken in this past draft.

Hmmm now that I think about it, my desire to tank next year outweighs my desire to get back a maximal return for Duchene. That coupled with the injury risk of keeping him really does bring me back to wanting Sakic to trade him this summer rather than next off-season.

I draw comparisons to the Leafs two years ago when they traded Kessel to the Pens. They didn't receive a return on it which was worthy of Kessel who actually had a much better year than Duchene did (albeit a big contract) but the real benefit of that trade is that it allowed them to tank and finish last and draft Matthews. I'm 100% sure that the Leafs would have finished 2nd or 4th last if they'd kept Kessel and he'd potted 30ish+ goals. We might suck just as bad next year even if we keep Duchene but it's worth moving him now rather than hoping to maximize the return next year. Also the return actually might still work out for the Leafs because I'm pretty sure they used the 1st round pick they got to trade for their goalie (Anderson) and Kapanen is looking pretty solid. Kessel was an year older than Duchene is now when that trade happened.

Now what if the hockey gods blessed us and we got picks 1 and 2 in the draft would we like to draft both Dahlin and Mcissac?
Obviously we need to acquire a first round pick in the duchene trade

Absolutely not. In that incredibly unlikely scenario, you go with Dahlin and Svechnikov and you immediately start planning the team around those two players.

I'd draft Dahlin and take offers for the #2 pick. If the offers aren't great, I'd draft the Russian kid.

Realistically I think we could have two first round picks next year and take two defensemen like Buffalo did with Risto and Zads. That would really give our blue line pool a massive, much needed boost.

Edit: Maybe we'll even take two high quality LHDs so Sakic can finally end his crusade for a LHD that matches very oddly specific requirements and just trades Duchene for futures and draft picks like any good GM would do while re-building.

Karlsson, but better defensively. Dahlin's a stud. We need him.

We already have a 2 way D man with great IQ at both ends of the ice. His name is Chris Bigras.

Nobody should get their hopes up on next year's draft. We'll have a surprise year where we miss the playoffs, mess up our draft positioning and slide right back into extreme disappointment the next year.

I'm an optimist.

Meh don't mind that we didn't end up with Lack. If we're going to take on a goalie cap dump give me Halak.

We already have Zads. No need to draft him again. We also have Bigras. One high quality D should be enough. Go forward with the next pick (preferably a bigger 2way C).
