The signing itself could be worse, but I utterly dislike it because it doesnt serve any true purpose.

oh gosh ... absolutely no mobility on that defense and barely any offense for a team that absolutely needs help from the backend offensively

Alzner - Weber
Benn - Petry
Schlemko - Davidson
Lernout

anyways, I'm done with this GM . Canadiens will have a long agony of teams that will make the playoffs and be pretenders for years to come. Draft picks with no upside and so on.

4.5M isn't as bad as I thought it would be... But realistically we're still talking about a guy that's probably worth closer to 3.5M.

Finally getting rid of a bad contract in Emelin, only to replace him with another a week later...

Its a great move if we retain markov or get someone better to play with Weber

as it stands.. i do agree..if he thinks hes replacing markov with Alzner, bergevin ****ed up

4.5 for a defensive d-man. Is Ken Daneyko still active?

People in Washington were talking as if LAST YEAR Alzner was losing a step. LAST YEAR. So I guess he'll gain it back since he is traded to us....

Galchenyuk 4.5? More between 5.5-6.

Drouin who did way less in this league signed for 5.5.

Might be one of the worst D core in the league, definitely the slowest.

Alzner is a solid D. He won't rush the puck up the ice but we need stability back there also, and he brings plenty of it. Wouldnt be surprised to see him eat minutes with Weber and be the stay at home while Weber makes the outlet pass.
Agreed. And lower cost/less term than what was being speculated. Alzner is a good add, in and of itself.

The biggest criticism here is coming from those who predictably will crap over any add made by the current GM. No matter what he does over the FA period, the same posters will be crowing about too much term, too much $$, crappy worthless player, etc..

It's all good, I'm personally happy to see Alzner added to the roster if the terms are as stated.

Advanced stats actually show that he doesn't do a good job of suppressing shots in front of the net, so he's not actually good in front of his own net either.

If we retained Markov, then it'd be a good move for what? a year? Alzner is not what the habs need.

Oh please, drop the victim act.

Lots of people praised Bergevin for the Drouin trade.

The issue is, he can't seem to build off of those good moves. It's always back to square one.

Exactly. I still think Markov signs here. Perfect partner for Petry.

Markov-Weber
Alzner-Petry
Schlemko-Benn
Jerabek-Davidson

Well that's not what I was referring to. Suppressing shots and protection from players are 2 different things. So with Weber and Alzner, Price who hates being hit, will have that impression that those 2 will prevent hits from happening.

Drouin has a lot more potential and has been a proven playoff performer though. I would not pay Galchenyuk more than Drouin.

The biggest criticism has come from Caps fans and anyone who watched the Caps in the playoffs.

Alzner and Orpik were big reasons why that team never could get over the hump.

Slow defenseman who can't pass the puck get exposed in the Playoffs.

Furthermore it's another example of the drain trust being so concerned about trying to minimize Prices GAA from under 2 to under 1.5 then trying to get goal scoring to a level that can actually win games.

You're blind or just frankly terrible at assessing hockey if you haven't seen that for the past ten seasons, teams are successful by having a mobile defenseman who can skate or pass the puck out of their zone quickly

Pure bullcrap. People have already sais who they would or wouldn't want. They won't invent things to bash him on if they agree with the move. I've dress my wishlist PRIOR to news we'd receive today. So he brings back who I want, I'll praise him. He brings who I don't, I'll bash him.

The issue is mostly that Alzner's signing could mean "losing" a player who is better than Karl Alzner.

This is what every coach is going to do. Forecheck the **** out of our slow D, if they dump it in, it will go to Alzner, they will funnel off to cover Petry to force Alzner to try to chip it out or move the puck.

When your defense can't handle the puck, skate or pass, good coaches exploit them.
