Sure, $4M for a 3rd pairing Dman makes sense. Better be more to this deal.

Same exact cap hit as Bonino has me laughing. Much less outrage, partially because of term I guess.

I think this is a precursor to something, but maybe not. Third pair could use help.

Word over there is Emelin for a 3rd, which would be huge.

And GMGM would need an iron lung, because GMDP would have ripped his other lung out...

His reputation is awful, but he is a good player. Not worth his salary, but he will be great on the 3rd pairing.

He'll crush some dudes from the 3rd pairing and play PK. Cap hit is too much, but it's 1 year and the Preds still have plenty of space.

Cap hit on a 1 year deal is meaningless at this point.

Wasn't expecting that. Upgrade for our bottom pair was a need. Poile's been a busy one today.

Emelin played 18:40 per game at 5-on-5 last season, only 13 seconds less than Weber.

I wonder how effective he's going to be, on a 3rd pairing, playing 12-14 minutes?

Anyways, he should help the 3rd pairing. It's just a bit expensive, but it's only one year, so it's no big deal.

The 3rd is in 2019 and there is salary retention

Vegas retained just under $1.2 million of Emelin's salary in the trade with Nashville

The fact that they retained makes it look like a purely upgrade on the 3rd pairing and depth.

This better just be a 3rd pair upgrade over Irwin not our replacement for Ekholm when he's traded for Duchene.

I'm guessing he is 3rd pair. Poile saw what we all saw every time Weber and Irwin were on the ice together in the playoffs

I was skeptical at first but with salary retention I really like it. Can fill in the top 4 in a pinch unlike Irwin/Weber

Emelin for 2.9M makes me feel better. We need an upgrade on the 3rd pair and a guy who has played top 4 before if there are injuries.

So, what do we do with all of our Defensemen now?

Subban
Josi
Ellis
Ekholm
Emelin
Irwin
Weber
Bitetto
Hunt?

Seems like someone is going to be traded unless we plan to just keep all of them.

I don't necessarily think that he was acquired for the 3rd pairing, but to play in the top 4 if Poile can now turn around and offer one of the latter for scoring help. Supposedly, he couldn't get anywhere on Duchene because Sakic insisted on Ekholm, so, now, he can actually entertain the idea a lot more than before. Obviously, if no trade is made, Emelin will likely end up on the 3rd pairing, but I suspect that Poile sees him as insurance in case an opportunity to address the scoring issue by trading a top-4 D does come up, either immediately or down the road.

Not a guy I was expecting to get at all, but should do well enough as a bottom pairing guy. Hope that's all there is to it, and neither Ellis, Ekholm or Josi is moving.

Me too! I was in the classic paralysis from analysis. Gives the Preds 20.15 mil to sign. Also based on HERO charts Emelin & Weber are a match. one providing what the other lacks.

What's left to do on Poile's wish list:

Get a RW. (please not Jagr, too slow.)

Move Irwin for ANYTHING

Get the travel secretary to use the club's frequent flyer miles to book him a resort package to someplace nice.

As noted, Hunt is gone already. Poile has kept 8 D on the roster before. Depth is a good thing.

Considering all the injuries last season...depth is a REAL good thing.

Don't listen to rumors and crazy MTL fans. He is much better than you think. Not a 3rd pairing guy by any measure.
