I cant believe Jagr breaking the Rangers single season points record didnt make the front page of any of the top newspapers. I didnt expect the whole cover, after all Randy Johnsons love child is a much more interesting story, but at least a little blurb on the top or bottom. Same goes for the bumping of the Rangers off MSG, even when they are at home. The Knicks are a joke and the Rangers still couldnt get decent press during the winter. They are going to have to make some serious noise in the postseason to get coverage now that baseball is starting.
I know that hockey, at least now, is the red headed stepchild of sports, but come on...
Face it hockey just isn't that interesting to the general populus. On the other hand when I checked news.google.com Jagr breaking the record was one of the 3 headlines for the sports section.
If the newspapers don't put "Jagr 53" on the front cover after he breaks the record...I just don't know anymore.
The thing that really ticks me off, is that once the Rangers make the playoffs, the media will ALLLLL jump on for the ride, as if they've been following this team all year.
See the '96 playoffs, Mike and the Mad Dog had Ranger coverage 24/7 on their show, and the Rangers didn't even make the finals.
while i was listening to espn radio last night, some guy called in to complain about the lack of coverage the rangers get (i believe it was the knicks post game show with brandon tierney). he went on about how the knicks suck, yet still get the main msg channel and espn radio station over NYR. Tierney basically acknowledged that the guy was right. He also said that after NYR lost to the flyers last week or so, he made a point to bring on LaGreca on the Knicks postgame show b/c he felt it was an important game and needed to be somewhat discussed. Tierney himself doesn't know much about hockey, but I think that's a nice idea.
He also said that no matter how good NYR is or how bad NYK is the fact that there is more general interest in basketball will mean more calls to the station about the basketball team. Also made the corrollary with baseball...if the Mets start incredibly strong and the Yanks are horrible, NYY will still get more coverage b/c they have more fans.
i don't really expect hockey to be a national news story once the playoffs start, or even a local one at that. however, when something groundbreaking happens like, i don't know, a franchise scoring record or something is broken, and its not on the back page cover, that kind of ticks me off.
See, I think that the host of the particular Sports Show has a lot to do with the type of callers calling in.
For example...if Tony Paige is doing the over night, random people will call up about boxing. Does that make boxing more popular than baseball just because more people happen to be talking about it?
When Steve Somers is on, the calls are ALL Rangers, and a little bit of Mets.
The real problem with the NY media is the lack of hockey educated talk show hosts, not a lack of interest in the sport itself.
i'll finish the setence...has been embarassing. if the NY media started covering the damn team more, a lot of people would hop on to the idea of the rangers having their best team since '94.

don't you know they have to tell you about how bad the knicks are? now that sells papers baby! and johnson's daughter looks like well...him? poor girl!
Actually, the Daily News has very good coverage of local news and politics (plus the funnies). And you can read it cover to cover in the time it takes to eat breakfast.
