Personal guarantees don't happen very often in professional sports, and are a lot more rare in the National Hockey League.

Enter Atlanta Thrashers' general manager Don Waddell, whose team is in the midst of an intense playoff hunt in the Eastern Conference.

“We'll be in the playoffs," Waddell told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Saturday night.

“If you want to write 'guarantee,' I have no problem with that.”

The Thrashers beat the Florida Panthers 6-4 Saturday night to snap a seven-game losing streak, their worst since opening the 2002-03 season with nine straight losses.

Entering Sunday's NHL games, the Thrashers - along with the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins - sat three points back of the Toronto Maple Leafs for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.

They team has three road games leading into the Olympic break and don't play another game at home until March 4.

Files from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution were used for this report.

The question is why not? If they do make the playoffs he looks like a hero. I love when when they are wrong and people shove it in their face.

psst: look at the date it was written.

Waddell received his fair share of ridicule at the time. There's no need to go through it again.

As a Sens fan, I'd rather play the Habs than ATL, so it's all good.

It was an interesting pledge made by Waddell and it might cost him his job. They're 7 pts. out with 1 game in hand on 8th, 7th and 6th. Even if they win that game in hand, being 5 pts. back means they need 3 straight wins coupled with one of those teams losing 3 straight. It's not over though considering they have 3 more cracks at Tampa and if they win all of those, they're back in. I'm rooting for them to make it, but not at the expense of the Habs though.

It will take more than one classless Habs fan to get me rooting for Heater to get his name on the Cup.

Funny how Sens fans are allowed to hold grudges against players, but when a Thrashers fan does you get all snotty about it.

You know I was talking about the thread starter right?

You don't start a thread like this because it's unclassy and bush league.

And gloating on the internet? even worse.

Well, I agree this is a bit insensetive to bring it up. Atlanta's not dead yet. I don't think they'll catch the Habs considering our schedule (some easy games, lots at home) but Tampa is still within reach thanks to the game in hand and 3 matchups (if you take 5 of 6 pts. and win the game in hand, you've caught them). Atlanta is an exciting team and I hope they can make it. Then if we win our 1st round matchup, maybe the Thrashers can help us by knocking off Ottawa then Carolina before we beat them in the conf. final

wait now ...

how did i become " classless" for something mr don wadell said

quote

"“We'll be in the playoffs," Waddell told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Saturday night.

“If you want to write 'guarantee,' I have no problem with that.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the day he said this meant nothing ...today his " gutsy call" can be some what disected as his team sits 7 pts back of tampa ,
new jersey , montreal . sure there not out of the playoffs yet.

me being a montreal fan doesnt have nothing to do with what wadell said ... maybe i should have reworded the title

maybe to " clock is ticking don "

stand up and be accounted for .......
