2017 Ranking #1

It's that time of year! Starting a little early but we'll try to make this last as far as possible into the summer. Generally 2 days per poll and 3 over the weekend but if it's a landslide we'll try to move on early.

Starting with 6 as usual but will gradually add more. As always, please suggest who you'd like to add to the next poll. Also, please state why you are voting a certain way so we can have some discussion. We'll do top 20 with 5 HMs again.

In keeping with HF guidelines we'll follow the same rules. A prospect is eligible if they have not played 65 NHL games (45 for goalies) or have not played the season of their 24th birthday. Not that these rules are gospel but I do think it's important to remain consistent year to year. Therefore the following additions and subtractions are made to the pool. If the majority disagrees with any ruling on these players then we can discuss making an exception but otherwise:

Removed

Rantanen - graduated
Grimaldi - age
Butcher - going FA
Henley - not qualified
Bourke - not qualified
Elson - not qualified
Petryk - age

Added

Makar - draft
Timmins - draft
Henry - draft
Kvaca - draft
Shvyrev - draft
Smirnov - draft
Leivermann - draft
Girard - trade

I would leave Butcher out unless he signs but if the majority disagree with that then we can change it, though it might be Aug 15 before he'd come up anyway. Siemens gets another year by virtue of his September birthday. Everything else should be self explanatory.

Thanks in advance for participating!

The first two should certainly be between Jost and Makar. I chose Makar. Yeah draft position plays a part, but I also believe he has a higher ceiling. Jost is not a wrong choice and I do believe it is close between the two of them.

Edit: wanted to clarify my thought on draft position. I agree somewhat with the post a couple after this that draft position is somewhat irrelevant, but I don't think it is entirely irrelevant. But this early into the kids' careers, combined with the fact I haven't watched these kids play, it is the best indicator I personally have of predicting future success, right or wrong.

Close ballot between Jost vs Makar. Draft position is irrelevant due some years are stronger than others, position and competition.

Makar has not shown his abilities internationally and against better competition, unlike Jost with College and Team Canada. Makar does seem to have incredible skills and possibly higher ceiling, but difficult to tell unless he plays against better competition.

Slight edge to Jost.

Close call between Jost and Makar. Went Makar because of his potential upside and because I like shiny new things.

Add Timmins.

I'm going Makar as well. I was really impressed seeing his talent level live and that's what sold me. Doesn't take away from Jost, who is close behind but for me I just value Makar a little higher right now.

Add Timmins

Compher is the most NHL ready and I think he's going to make a big impact next season. For that reason I have him at #1.

Makar. Don't think Jost has a huge upside even if he's safer so going pure upside with Brooks

Jost, 100 times over. Makar has way too much risk associated with him to be even close. His potential means nothing if he never reaches it, and I don't think he will. Jost is already an NHL player and coupled with his inborn leadership and attitude he is easily the #1 prospect.

Going with Jost because he feels way safer to achieve his potential. As to Makar who's got a little more risk.

Voted Jost. I'm one of the biggest Makar supporters here but maybe not to jinx it I'd go with Jost instead.

Makar.

I think he's a better prospect and he's more important moving forward as well.

This is where the "shiny new toy I've never seen play, but he's new so he must be better" syndrome kicks in.

At least wait until we have a better idea of the player Makar could/will become before blindly branding him #1.

Jost for me. I can't vote for Makar without knowing how he plays against better competition. He's certainly an intriguing prospect though.

I'm gonna go Makar here based on pure ceiling. Really, though, it's a toss up between him and Jost who I think is already largely NHL ready. Add Timmins.

Going with Makar because of ceiling. Will be voting Jost next and glad to see it's close.

Jost isn't that far removed from Junior A himself. He definitely had a good year but a lot of folks want to see him in the AHL to start and if that happened I think would alter some of the NHL ready credit he's getting.

I'll go with Jost, at this point he seems to be the most sure one to become an impact player, maybe in two/three years it will be Makar.

I went Makar, in big part because of positional needs. So he is our most important prospect. His ceiling played a part obviously and the risk associated made it a close call with Jost.

Not that I'm not a fan of Jost, I certainly am, but how is he "already an NHL player"? Playing the last 6 games of the season doesn't make him an NHL player, because while I think this is unlikely, there's still a chance he doesn't make the team out of training camp and needs AHL time.

At any rate, I'm voting Makar because his ceiling is higher than Jost's, even if there's risks involved.
