When did you start to believe in this team last year?

Hey guys,

Usually during the lazy summer months, I start going back and watching all the highlights of the regular season (and playoffs this year ). One of the most prominent feelings I had was thinking that we were just overachieving for much of the year. I was worried that we were going to collapse due to the weak mental fortitude we showed for the last 10 years. However, I remember there was a game where I changed my tune, and started believing that this team was actually for real and so I wanted to see if this trend caught on with some of you guys.

I'll go ahead and post the game where I started to really believe in this team instead of being fearful that we were going to fall apart.

This was the california road trip right before the all star game, and we were facing the ducks. We walked into the honda pond and decimated them 4-0. After the draisaitl goal, I really started to think that this season wasn't a fluke!

What are some games that you guys remember that changed your outlook on the season? Feel free to post highlights too!

After the Hall for Larsson trade. It told me Chiarelli was serious about trying to fix the team. Yakupov being dealt before the season started was the clincher for me.

I didn't think they'd be as good as they were, but very early on last year this team showed me something I haven't seen since Pronger.

And that change was the willingness to battle back when down. There were multiple games where we were down, came back, then went down again, but then we came back. In previous years we barely would ever come back, if we did and went down again the team would be down on themselves and go into a slump.

In the past, opposing players could do whatever the hell they want, and our players never retaliated. These two videos made me fully believe the team plays for each other like a close group.

I believed before the season started that the team on paper was a playoff calibre team.

The Hall for Larsson trade and then signing Lucic really balanced the roster. As soon as that was cleared up it was just a matter of chemistry. Which truth be told was a bit hit and miss all year.

I didn't actually accept that the Oilers were making the playoffs until they actually clinched. 10 years of pain left a sliver of doubt right up until the day we clinched, even tho we kept a solid playoff birth pretty much the whole season.

The big one for me was when the Oilers held on to win a rigged game against Arizona.

Obviously not rigged, but you know the one. The refs did everything they could to help Arizona. Still came out on top. Held on and won through some serious adversity to get the two points.

And the "Almost" moment was the second Calgary win. A lot of goals were scored.

I can't remember exactly when it was but I believe it was the December record, after the shaky November.

Talbot beat Anaheim, SJ, LA, St. Louis and Tampa Bay that month, amongst others.

Yeah we really did have a bad stretch in november, basically pissed away our hot start, but they did turn it around.

The Arizona game is another good one. Just seemed like a game we were destined to lose.

For me it took a really long time. Even though we had a good record I still had this feeling that the walls were eventually gonna colapse in on us.

I think the turning point for me came in January. We had a back to back against Anaheim and then San Jose in Cali. I was thinking damn we need these points, but we're gonna lose both games. We won 4-0 and 4-1 and looked good doing it.

My confidence kept growing from there to the point where I picked the Oilers to go to the final and today I'm very confident this team will win a cup in the next 9 years.

When they beat Chicago 5-0...they had just come off a 5-game losing streak and beat the Stars but the real test was against the Hawks

they beat them soundly

This, plus for me also adding Lucic. The only thing I felt we were really missing was an OFD, which ended up being our achilles heel, and likely the cause of our horrible PP in the first half of the season. But, it was the first time since the rebuild started where I predicted we'd make the playoffs before the season started, being seriously hindered by injuries the year previous.

The hot start in October made it official. Everything from then on just showed that we'd have some growing pains but the skill we had on the roster was undeniable even in the lean months.

When quick got injured.

And at some point in January when it became clear they were really able to grind through their struggles.

That's sort of when Todd and the players started talking about "building" things into their game.

I agree. Maybe, if the team keeps up, we'll be able to see the exact moment we found the ability to truly believe in them
Around that point for me, give or take a couple games.

Sadly for me it was when LA went through a 8 game stretch in March going 2W-6L dropping out of playoffs race.
The back to back losses to CGY and EDM sealed playoffs birth for us.

Sharks took a nose dive as well.

This. It put us right back in a fight for 1st in the division - and at that point I felt we could go far. Hell, we should have been in the WCF.

This team is legitemate contenders for the West, IMO.

To truly believe? Quite late for me. We won 4 straight in mid March that I think finally convinced me 100% we would be a playoff team.

I remember we lost three in a row in early March and despite still being essentially a playoff lock I was pretty worried the team would collapse down the stretch. With those 3 games lost we were 7-9-1 since the all-star break and just playing some terrible hockey.

Then we went ahead and rattled off 4 straight wins, and won 12 of the final 14 games.

When I realized Talbot wasn't playing around.

Talbot was major for this teams success.

Talbot was a big factor because he still was left out to dry in a majority of games.

LMAO even though he didn't do much. The Lucic signing was a good hint that team planned to be competitive from now on.
