Sounds like Sekera won't be out that long anyway.

From what I can gather from 4 minutes searching through the Devils forum he started out like a bat out of hell with the Devils last year, took everyone by surprise and made the team. Shows plenty of skill, but as the season went on his play got worse and he ended up down in the minors and struggled down there as well. Didn't receive a QO from them and let him go.
Sounds like Philip Larsen with Dallas. Tweener

First year in NA last year so always tough to adapt. Hopefully last year was his steep learning curve and he comes out next year and plays full time like how he started out last year

I do remember seeing his name pop up to start this year when he was a suprise break out player. Didnt follow himk much after but I guess its because he got dropped to AHL.

I think I'd pencil him in on pairing 3 on the left side until Sekera is back. Could be an interesting guy to pair with Russell.

Klef-Lars
Nurse-Benning
Auvitu-Russell
It's pretty obvious they're pairing Russell with Benning.

It is interesting (both the signing and hive mind mentality). Pretty unproven player with a good amount of buzz around him (pun intended). Could be one of the euro FAs that impress and have late emerging careers, probably not but still a low risk signing

Although on a whole HFOil does tend to favor whatever deal is made or twist any bad deal into a good trade. Strome for Eberle was discussed pretty heavily months before it was made and universally disliked. Then the trade is made a week after its commonly held as a positive deal

It is interesting due to the lack of anything else hockey related occurring today.

Let's be honest, if Drai signed today this thread would be dead silent

He is fluent in five languages – French, English, Finnish, Russian and German.

Looks like JP will have another friend aside from JJ.

I agree as well.

I had both those players high up on the list of UFA players with small NHL samples but that had good stats and would make for good depth dmen signings.

No doubt Chia and the Oilers do look at the underlying stats as well when they make these calculated bets.

Sounds? You mean from this signing or has there been an update?

This signing blows my conspiracy theory up.

Edmonton has thrown away: Marincin, Davidson, Reinhart, Musil, and Osterle. Not that Musil was a true loss but our LD depth which was ungodly strong is now only decent.

With Sekera injured and the above "moved" I was thinking the way had been somewhat "intentionally" paved to give Simpson a shot that IMO he didn't truly deserve.

But with this signing it looks like we have enough competition to make sure Simpson never sees the light of day again.

What if he you know... earns the right to see the light of day again?

Actually...to be fair it was pretty clear why the Devils lost interest.
Danyko said that his play dropped off quite a bit after 15 games and then he was sent down to the AHL where he continued to struggle.

Still...its a good, low risk move by Chiarelli.

I like these take a chance depth signings a lot more now that the team has some solid NHL defenders to reliably put in front of them. Just imagine Schultz with the support he would have now.

Just another sign that things are different.

Sekera said in a interview with a Slovakian newspaper that he expects to be back in 6 months, not 9.

He played as a forward until about 5 years ago. Even during the first season with HIFK he sometimes played as a forward due to injuries.

They always throw the 6-9 months into ACL return times because a slight chance exists that something can go wrong during physiotherapy and set back the recovery time. Professional athletes that have great muscle strength entering surgery, a determination to recover their previous form, and dedication to their physiotherapy regime will likely be on the short side of the recovery times. The best example being Adrian Peterson returning as a dominant RB after only 5 months post-ACL reconstruction surgery.

And if coach wants he can automatically play with four forwards if he gives Yohann some freedom.
He really can join the rush but if Devils wanted more of his defensive game it might been pushing him off the track.

He was sent down because Moore and Merrill were on one way contract, if it weren't because of them he would have stick with the Devils. He's a great puck moving dman with good skating, terribly calm with the puck, good on ice vision. Awarded best defenseman in Finland two years ago.

I like the player in a vacuum, but... why? We have approximately 12,000 LD now:

Klef
Sekera
Russell
Nurse
Auvitu
--------
Stanton
Jones
Simpson
Lowe
Paigin
Betker
--------
Lagesson
Niemelainen
Samorukov

Even with Sekera on IR to start and a couple of them able to play the other side, it's still too much depth with too many guys around the same age. Something has to give here; perhaps my theory of Nurse now being viewed as expendable is not that far off.

Chia destroys the small moves.

Seriously, if you combined Chiarelli's small moves with Poile's big moves you'd have the best GM in the league, and it wouldn't even be close.
