I remember people saying Spider Mable! Don't rescue him! Just leave him be!

He was a good guy off the ice and well respected.

Wow, but Hyrule is so far away....

16 seasons is very good for a defenseman. Hope his retirement goes well.

Listening to 1260 sounds like he's already gotten involved and prepared for post NHL life through investments and other activities and is enjoying life away from hockey, so it should go well for him

Guy was brought in/paid to be a #4. A role that was impossible because the Oilers didn't have a #1 through #3. Got put in over his head and got way too much flack on the boards here.

Solid player, sounds like a solid guy. Too bad it didn't turn out better here for him.

Ference always struck me as a pretty intelligent guy, so that doesn't surprise me.

Agreed. If he him and Russell swapped ages I imagine everyone would rather have Ference.

Ference is a great dude and did his best in an awful situation as captain.

I agree that he took too much flak for trying to fill a hole in the lineup that he wasn't suited for.

I read that he's sticking around in Edmonton which makes me glad since he does a lot of good for the community. Hope the best for him in the future and congratulate him on a great career.

Was awesome in the community. He was also solid enough his first year. Shame his game tailed off so fast, injuries really caught up to him.

It's dangerous to go alone! Take this $13M.

Congrats on the retirement, Andrew.

One more remnant of the decade of darkness washed away.

Second worst captain in team history.

Awesome guy, and a great Captain for the Oilers in crappy circumstances. Sucked that he had to end his career the way did.

Moreau was a true warrior who was very similar to Ference in making the most of his abilities, being a true pro, and serving the community. He did a lot in the community and not just the kind of stuff a guy does because he's an Oiler, i know personally of some things he did for a sick kid that were above and beyond what anyone would ever expect. He played hard, did the right things on the ice and off the ice. Every player gets old and the team sucking wasn't the fault of the guy who was a 3rd liner at best (and a VERY good one in his prime). The Moreau hate is among the weirdest and most bizarre things i've ever read on these boards.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about Moreau and how he was an excellent person off the ice.

I think the hatred he gets is because of how it was viewed that he was divisive in the locker room (although time has proven that maybe he wasn't in the wrong, with how craptastic 'HOPE' turned out to be and how bad Oilers management was at the time).

He was nothing like Corson, who was a complete and utter ****** bag on and off the ice.

I was referring to Corson. You honestly think Moreau was a worse captain than Ference? Noticed a couple other people stood up for Moreau as well.

Bangers is dead on. HOPE wasn't the salvation everyone thought it would be. Maybe Moreau just saw the problems with Hall as a locker room presence really early on?

Yep, dead on. Saw it a full year before hall was even drafted. Moreau never played a game with any of Hall, eberle, paajarvi etc.

With Moreau it was always about his time as a captain.

I'll always respect him as a player and a member of the community, but during his Captaincy, he really seemed to focus on the deficiencies in other parts of the game while ignoring the deficiencies where he was a key piece.

If I recall properly there was one game where he criticized the Power Play for only getting one goal in a loss while his PK allowed three against. Though that is an isolated comment, in general that kind of stuff was common during the time. You could also look at the time period where "the culture" became an issue, it was right around the time he was captain.

He was an awesome teammate, but wasn't quite the leader everyone anticipated he would be.

I'd still cheer for him anytime he would be in the rink, though. Certainly wouldn't with Corson.
