Who won this trade? 7-1-2012

On July 1, 2012 the Columbus Blue Jackets traded Defenseman Marc Methot to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Right Winger Nick Foligno.

Methot was a 6th round pick of Columbus (#168 overall) in the 2003 draft. Up to that point, Methot had spent parts of 6 seasons in the NHL. He played in 275 NHL games recording 7-44-51.

Foligno was a 1st round pick of the Senators (#28 OA) of the 2006 draft. In his 5 seasons with the Senators, Foligno had played in 351 NHL games and had recorded 61-87-148.

Since the trade, Methot slid into a role of "Robin" along side of Erik Karlsson's "Batman" allowing Karlsson to win the Norris trophy as the leagues best defenseman. Since the trade Methot has played in 304 games over the 4 full and one partial season and registered 14-55-69.

For Foligno's part, in his 4 full and one partial season, he has recorded 93-126-219 in the 345 games he has placed since that time. Foligno earned the captinancy of his team and was recently recognized for his leadership in winning the King Clancy trophy and Mark Messier Leadership award.

Methot recently left the Senators for the Dallas Stars by way of the Vegas Golden Knights expansion draft. Methot was excited about the trade initially because he was born and raised in Ottawa and this allowed him to play close to his family for his hometown team. For Foligno's part he has embraced his role in Columbus both on and off the ice.

Since the book has been closed on the Senators side of the equation, it might be a little summer fun to look back at this trade and see if there was a clear winner. Neither team added prospects, picks or players to the equation. It was a straight 1-1 hockey trade.

Was there a winner on this trade? If so, who won? Do you remember your opinion at the time and was your first opinion correct?

I mean obviously we're probably the winners now since Methot has moved on. But when it comes to pure impact on and off the ice I think its a complete win for both teams. Methot blossomed into a top 4 shutdown defenseman almost immediately, got to play in front of his hometown fans, had a few playoff appearances with alot of wins, and formed a bond with the best defenseman in the world.

We got a top 6 heart and soul winger who is obviously now our captain. He's invested alot into this team and into this city with his on and off ice donations. He's apart of the biggest goal in franchise history (Game 4 over PIT) and has obviously had some very productive seasons.

This is about as even as it gets. A win-win pure hockey deal. Both teams would do the deal again and not look back. A great move by both Howson and Murray.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts exactly.

This trade gets regularly cited as an excellent example of a "win-win" trade.
