Actually at this point I am rooting against the flyers.. we can still get 5th if the Flyers go on a slump and we win more games than the log jam we find ourselves stuck in.

so..

GO DEVILS GO!!!

Philly could lose the 5th spot if they drop their 3 games vs NJ .

Let me expand...

We have 2 more games against the Devils.. and none against the Flyers.

Now, assume we win those 2 games, and the flyers go on a slump.

Now, also, assume that at the end of the season we have more points than the Devils and Lightning (which is possible with their scheds)

Now, if you have the Flyers go on a slump and go, let's say 3-7, the devils go 6-3, and the lightning go 6-3, and we go 7-2 - that gives us a 1 point edge over the Flyers, and 2 over the Bolts and Devils, thus giving us 5th and matchup with Buffalo.

Now, explain to me again why it is a bad thing to see the Flyers win?

At this point, we are either going to finish 7th or 8th, forget 6th b/c the Bolts have 2 more wins than us, and in any tie breaker scenario we come 3rd out of the 3. I would much rather be 5th, than 7th or 8th. Again, explain to me why seeing the Flyers rack up the points is a good thing?

uh....right... Buy a loto ticket...you'll have more chance of wining. Wishful thinking can be realy fun...but hey...

http://www.mc79hockey.com/
chances of Habs finishing 5th = 1.6%
Chances of flyers finishing 5= 62.9% , 6= 3.4%, 7th =0.6 %

You really think the flyers cant win more then 2 of these games?

Wishful thinking indeed.. but again it doesn't matter what the devils do to the flyers, we have two games against them, that is where this is going to play out.

The flyers have a weak schedule, admittely, and ours is weaker. That being said, I would rather finish in 5th, than 6th or 7th.

My point is that as fans wherever there's hope we should cling to it. And if that means rooting against the team we are chasing for 7th or 8th when they are playing a longshot "catchable" opponent in 5th, then that's what you gotta do. You can't sit back and think well, we have a 1.7% chance of catching them.. it's defeatist.

As of now, I think we can all safely assume we will make the playoffs, so why not go for the highest ranking instead of setteling for whatever we get. I would much rather face the Sabres than the Canes or Sens, so again, why is it wrong to think that way?

Umm... Simple. We're aiming for 6th. 6th place doesn't have us play the Canes or Sens either. If we're battling for 6th, we CLEARLY want Philly to win this game.

By we you mean the posters right? Because I don't think that if you asked the players, coaches, managment if they would settle for 6th, when they knew 5th was still in play that they would say: "yes that is what we are aiming for, 6th, we don't care about 5th, we want to be 6th. But in the end, all that matters is making the playoffs."

Hell, I'll start a survey thread just to gauge the temperature of what people think, and I am fully prepared to see your view triumph.

I just think it's sad that people lack the hope to finish higher... I know what the reality is, but as long as that possibility exists then that is the reality I am going to cling to.

Brodeur has only lost one game with a three goal lead in the third period.

Yes, by We, I did indeed mean posters.

And by the way, I'd rather finish 6th than 5th. I'd rather play Philly or the Rangers than Buffalo (though I'd MUCH rather take any of the above over Ottawa or Carolina), and since 4th is not attainable, 6th is what I want.

I sort of see your point, I just think it's rather flawed given the present circumstances.

Let me go further then.

Forget 6th.. Look at the standings.. the Bolts have 2 more wins than us, we have the better schedule for sure, but we also have worse goal differential than the Devils. I just can't see us finishing 6th.

If we did everything right, meaning one more win in the next 10 games then either the Bolts/Devils, then we get 6th, but I want to take that one step further and catch the Flyers hoping they slump.

Frankly, I am not sure about the Sabres, I want to see how we matchup against them in our next 2 games against them before I pass judgement. I have seen enough against the Rags to be both scared and confident, so who knows...

Simple....Flyers catch the rangers and finish 3rd.
We finish 6th and play the Flyers in the first round. We've outplayed them all year.

We are 3-1 gainst both teams, with some OT games.

Against the Sabres, we are 3-3 so far.. what happens next will really be the deal breaker for me. If you asked me out of the 3 who would I rather face, it would be the Sabres.

My reasons:

- Philly will kill us in the playoffs, they can step it up and match our new found toughness. They are kind of like the team that the Bruins should have been when we met them in the playoffs.

- The Rags, scare the crap out of me. Lots of talent, good goaltending, and in the playoffs for the first time in a while. Not a team I want to meet in the first round.

- Buffalo is a team we matchup well against. We are both pretty equal across the board in all aspects, but I'd give them the edge on D. They don't scare me the way Philly and New York do. They remind me a lot of our team, except they work harder. I think that they might be tired, and our guys might end up working harde rin a 7 game set, especially given the second wind a playoff atmosphere can bring to the table with the Habs.

Thing is, we don't control our own destiny by a longshot for 5th place, while we do for 6th. Setting 5th as a goal is unrealistic.

I'm quite confident against the flyers. They couldnt handle our speed all year long. And out of those 3 teams...its the one with the weakest goaltenting. I think. Anyway....I'm not worrying about who we could play....my only concern is confirming our spot in the playoffs. Then...anything can happen.

To bad there's no chance the Devils will meet Montreal in the first round, because, Marty just has your number and loves playing in Montreal.
