Not for a lack of trying!

There must be a way in which Cowen can make this team better in any way?

Maybe he'll make our other fringe D look worlds better. That'll help

Yeah, it's if he makes the team in camp and performs passably as a depth defenseman. It's improbable at this point that he does well but come on people.

Cowen's skating is being blown out of proportion. He's not a good skater, but he's not as awful as everyone is making it out to be. At least he wasn't pre-surgery. Every other part of his game is awful though.

By pushing our other LHD prospects to play a little harder in camp to earn a spot?

Really though, I think people are somewhat confused about the difference between a PTO and a contract.

Oh, I know the difference, but still don't like the move anyway. They shouldn't even be looking at people like this.

My worry is that he has an adequate training camp, gets signed and he's given 3/4 of the year while to find his feet while blocking players like Mironov.

Maybe they're not, though, and their only intention is to use him to create some competition for their prospects? There's almost zero chance they actually think he could help them unless Bigras and Siemens really suck it up in camp. I bet Warsofsky would even be more likely to earn a spot in camp.

You have to believe you are fast, to be fast. Warm-up skates with Cowen on the ice will make everyone feel like Bure.

Detroit stole our thunder by inviting David Booth to camp.

When do people start questioning if Detroit openly tanking so blatantly is in poor taste or not? Cause they're heading towards "Sabres prep'ing for McDavid" levels of tankitude.

That's what I'm HOPING is the case. Just push the kids hard enough so they know their spots aren't guaranteed. I still say if this is the case they could offer a PTO to a better player though.

I dont think they are tanking. They are following the Avs model of all the vets unintentional tank.

The type of player doesn't make sense. Only thing I can think of is that we couldn't get any other PTOs, or they want someone who can fight and stand up for teammates during the preseason.

So people are losing their minds over a PTO signing?

Okay, whatever.

Or, maybe if they have no intention of signing their PTO, they would rather not give a PTO to a guy who has a chance and waste his time when he could get a contract somewhere else. I don't think Cowan's phone was exactly ringing off the hook this summer. The Avs have historically been pretty choosy about who they invite to camp, and I don't think they like taking a chance at a contract away from a guy who may have a better chance elsewhere. Cowan probably couldn't get a contract with anybody, I think they would feel fairly safe that cutting him loose isn't going to be costing him an NHL job this year.

Tankitude doesn't judge based on such a silly thing as intentions.

And it is likely to have exactly the same negative effects.

I understand this is just a PTO, but look at the number of NHL defensemen signed. Three. One plays the left side, and that is a guy who is a 6/7 sort ideally. Beyond that you have a bunch of rookies and an unsigned Russian. Total in the organization, there are just 12 D signed... a number of those shouldn't even be close to touching NHL ice at this point. There is a real threat, even if it is just numbers, that Cowen gets a deal. Say Bigras has a poor camp (or just not good enough to convince Bednar to keep him in the top 6... so he gets sent down) and one D gets a 3-4 week injury, Cowen is almost guaranteed a deal at that point. More PTOs could come, a trade could happen... things could change, but right now, I'd say the odds are better than 50/50 that he gets a contract.

Does Cowen have any positive things that he can contribute to this team?

He'd make us more appreciative of Nate Guenin.
