I'd prefer not, I'd rather spend the money on key players in more important positions. Yes JVR is a good piece to have on the wing but it's easier to plug and play with young inexperienced wingers making 650k than finding centers and Dmen making league minimum.

I am losing faith in Friedman. He's becoming a random rumor speculation machine

JVR unfortunately has no future with the Leafs. Especially JVR knowing that this could be his last chance of a solid deal. Leafs on the same note has contracts coming up for the young 3

The old regime vets are good as gone. Which speaks volume of our depth now

If the template is trading him to another team for something useful and letting his new team overpay him, then it sounds like something I can get behind.

One more thought, has Friedman actually bothered to sit down and calculate the Leafs' future cap structure in the next 3 seasons? It really seems like he hasn't done that at all when he thinks the Leafs have room to pay JVR $6M AAV AND pay Nylander, Matthews and Marner.

I would love to have him back because there is no replacement in the system for him, ans no Kapenan is not a replacement.

That said at 8 years no, absolutely not

$5.75 x 8 is a fabulous deal. Take it if presented.

P.S. that's a discount for solid 30 goal guys.

8 years at an aav around 5-5.25 would work and keeps a valuable piece in the fold. Structure the deal so he's paid 6.5 over the first 5 then the minimum allowed for the last three to bring the aav down. I think a guy like jvr will age well.
Depends on what the management thinks their chances of acquiring an elite d man are and keeping flexibility for that

Hell no. Complimentary wingers getting 8 year deals is insanity.

There's room. Almost every successful team has 25-28m tied into their top 3.
We just have to be wise about who gets the remaining dollars.
A guy who's basically a lock for 25-25 but more likely 30-30 for the contract duration is a piece worth holding onto

Understand his point about the team not being eager to trade him, but that doesn't necessarily indicate a willingness to re-sign him long term either. I wouldn't trade him now to clear a forward logjam; a good piece that helps us now would have to be coming back. If the team is in good shape up front and in the standings at the trade deadline, maybe we can try to get a return then if the idea is to move on.

I don't think it is a great idea for us to sink that much cap into a complementary winger that is a black hole defensively, when the wing is an organizational strength and we need to use resources to fix the backend

8 year deals for cheap though? For somebody who has been healthy his whole leaf career? For a 55-65 point player? Nothing wrong with it IMO if we can get him at 5M-5.5M. Would rather keep JvR than let him walk for nothing because we sure as hell aren't trading him at the deadline.

I agree, just idiotic IMHO.

Well, unless it's a low cost deal, and, excludes a NTC/NMC.

Only way this makes an once of sense is if there was no ,no trade clause. Sign him up to a great cap friendly long term deal and move him out. Lots of teams would love JVR for 6+ years at 5.75.

Otherwise this story is trash.

Paying him that till he's 37 is not a great deal though

I'd be happy to keep JVR around...but I just don't see it. Maybe if you can get him in the 5 million range you can find a way to make it work. But it's going to be tight. Plus I don't see him taking that. He's been on a bargain deal for years. He's going to want to get paid over 6 million per year.

Less than 6M/year is pretty good for a guy who's skillset won't worsen with age.

It's too bad we signed Marleau.
