Do you think Clarke will blow the team up and rebuild around Carter, Pitkanen, and Richards? And by blow up, I mean look at dealing guys like Gagne, Handzus, Umberger, Potulny, Meyer, Hatcher, Rathje, etc.......?

The Flyers are being rebuilt, retooled, reloaded, whatever you want to call it right before our eyes from WITHIN the organization. Clarke has been adding a piece here and there, but what is most substantial is the QUALITY of the guys they have drafted or stolen via trade who are younger. The "growth through the draft" theory seems to be taking hold in Philly. I'd say the next core will look something like this:

Gagne - Carter - Umberger
Ruzicka - Potulny - NEW ADDITION
Downie - Richards - Dimitrakos
Bellamy - Handzus - Radivojevic

Pitkanen - Rathje (will see the end of his contract here, he's a Lombardi choice)
Johnsson or NEW ADDITION - Hatcher (he will also see the end of his contract here)
Meyer - Picard

Niittymaki or Esche - Beauchamin

The Flyers will never completely blow up the team as long as Ed Snider and Clarke are around.

I'd think having a line of Downie-Richards-Bellamy would be EXTREMELY frustrating to play against and having a 4th line of Dimi-Zeus-Radio would be a nightmare for teams to deal with down low when they start cycling and grinding on the boards.

I don't think Gagne, Meyer, Umberger, or Handzus would be among those sent away. They are all relatively young guys. Why would you send them packing if they have a good decade and a half left in them?

If you're rebuilding a team, don't you want young talent or fairly young experienced vets, like Gagne, Handzus, Umberger, Potulny, Meyer...???

so morbid...

this organization has been undergoing a massive youth movement over the last couple of years, which culminated in the Phantoms winning the AHL last year. if we have to blow up the team we will be blowing it up WITH youth to get youth... however, i don't think we need to worry about that. i think this team will be much stronger next year than it is this year as Carter, Richards, Umberger, Meyer, Pitkanen, etc. will all have a (another) year of service in the NHL under their belt. they'll have a summer to get stronger, so on and so forth.

winning the cup is just as much about luck as it is about being good... this team is pretty good (we'd probably be winning the division and competing for the 1st/2nd seed if we hadn't been devestated by injuries this season) and will continue to be pretty good. hell, if one of Ruzicka/Potulny can turn into a legit scoring winger in the NHL and Downie pans out as the 3rd/2nd line uber pest that he's supposed to be you're looking at a very strong lineup 2-3 years out... probably even better 5 years from now (Gags will only be 30 then).

Didn't Clarke captain the last Flyers team to win the Cup?

I know several Flyers fans, and they are convinced that good ol' Bobby boy will never let the team win another Cup, and take that honor from him. That's why your team kicks butt every year in the regular season, then stinks it up in the playoffs.

Think Ben Eager is way ahead of Bellemy and is better fit as well. It is the defesne I worry about. Also the Flyers will always be active in free agency and fill a few voids that way. They will also trade some of these players at some point if they get close for what they feel is the missing piece.

Gee Bubba, nice to see you here. Couldn't handle staying on Colorado's board and bothering the people there?

*gathers his stuff -- including his autographed Forsberg jersey -- and storms out in a huff!*

Good luck in the playoffs, folks.

At 26, 25, and 29, it doesn't seem likely that Gagne, Meyers, and Handzus have that many years left in them.

That aside, I don't see any reason at all why anyone would be thinking "blow up."
