Official GDT: Islanders vs Rangers 4/6

at
(33-37-5 71 pts 12 EAST) (42-21-12 96pts 3 EAST)

7:00 PM
MSG/FSNY
WEPN (1050), WBBR (1130)

Quote:
In a special pregame ceremony, a Rangers player will be presented the prestigious MetLife/Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award. Voted on by the fans, this honor is given annually a player who "goes above and beyond the call of duty." The on-ice ceremony, which begins at 7:04 p.m., will be shown as part of the MSG Network telecast of this game.

It's only fitting that an award for extra effort would be handed out in the first game after a season-long effort to reach the postseason was realized. With their 3-2 overtime shootout victory over the Flyers on Tuesday, the Rangers guaranteed their first playoff berth since 1997 and need just four more points in the standings to reach 100 for the first time since the 1993-94 Stanley Cup championship season.

The Islanders are in the midst of a five game losing streak and played last night in Toronto, while the Rangers had the day off. Hopefully we come out of the gate flying and are able to wear down the Islanders. This is two points that we can't afford to let slip away. Weekes vs DiPietro in net.

LETS GO RANGERS!

Great to see some competition for the McDondald award for once.

Its given to the player who "goes above and beyond the call of duty."

My top 5 are 1. Nylander - Motivation: Gives the term work ethic a new meaning. Is having a career year, as a 34 y/o here in NY. His work off the ice have made him one of the premium centers in the league. 2. Jagr - Motivation: His drive plain and simple, just a enourmous will. 3. Petr Prucha - Motivation: Got more gut then a slaughter house. 4. Hollweg - Motivation: Knows that he is "one hit away", but doesn't let it affect him. 5. Ortmayer - Motivation: The same reason he have one it before.

It certainly is going to be interesting this year. Normally it has gone to a blue-collar type player, like an Ortmeyer, Betts, Ward, Moore or Hollweg, but it definitely seems like it could go to somebody like Straka or Lundqvist as well.

It's safe to say the Rangers have had a ton of players "go above and beyond the call of duty" this year, and that's a big reason why we're in the playoffs.

Ola, no Lundqvist?

I can't decide of Jagr is a slam dunk for the award, or if fans feel like they want to honor someone else since he looks to be taking home several other awards and records.

Fans Award

If this was a players award it would no doubt go to Weekes. However the fans are not in Kevin's corner so you can cross him off the list. Kasper has my vote, this guy takes it on the chin everynight and give it rightback to the other team and then laughs about it after the game.

Can a goalie win it?

On Jagr, its a fan award. They'll go with the players they like the most. Jagr IMO should probably win it, but I think other players would appriciate it more and I would never vote on him. I think its natrual for fans to go with a player like Hollweg, or maybe even Prucha. Or of course Lundqvist.

I am not sure about that. I mean, they back him because he is having a tough year. Thats the way it should be. Talk in all honor but action is what it should be about.

I think as a player you really appriciate the kind of effort Ortmayer and Kaspar for example is putting out there for example. Malik for example have blocked 114 shots this year, I wonder what the department of health would say about that if it ended up on their desk. Might not see any hockey in a while...

53 is in the bag tonight. The way Jagr played against Philly oh man, Esche had the game of his life. No way Dipi and the young Isles D keep Jagr from his destiny.

I don't know it will have any affect because this is a rivalry, but I believe the Islanders were officially eliminated from the playoffs with their last loss.

With regards to the award, even though its a fan award, the fans typically give it to a worker. Can someone supply a list of past winners?

Thanks

I was able to get two tickets tonight. I would love to see Jagr break the record tonight, as too would my little brother, who I'm taking to his first hockey game.

Hopefully Weekes comes into this game full of confidence from his win over Philly and stays sharp. There was such a marked difference between his shootout performance against them than his performance against Atlanta (I think? The one where he was victumized 5-hole repeatedly?). Before he looked unsure and like he was second guessing. The other night he looked confident and steady.

If he keeps that up then the Rangers should win this one...just the usual stay out of the box and keep the pressure on the isles defense and goalie. Would like to see a big game out of the second line tonight as well, and for Rozsival and the defense to step it up

Anybody else notice that he got rid of his new pads? Perhaps that had something to do with it. I noticed with those new pads his five hole was huge, and sure enough I think almost every goal scored against him went five-hole, except for one or two against Buffalo.

Back to the award, it seems that during the palyoff bound years the skill players took home the extra-effort award.

But during the non-playoff years, the years where any effort was apprecaited by the fans, the grinders took it home. Take a look.

Jed Ortmeyer 2003-04
Matthew Barnaby 2002-03
Sandy McCarthy 2001-02
Sandy McCarthy 2000-01
Adam Graves 1999-00
Adam Graves 1998-99

Could go either way. I'd personally like to see a guy like Straka, Moore, or Ortmeyer take it home.

Hmm I thought Darren Landgon won it in 97/98, when I was at the Garden for my first and only Ranger game up to date.
Perhaps he got some other award?

I would think...

that Weekes would have a good game. He falters when he has 2-3 weeks between starts. But, the team in front of him has to show up. Jagr had 12 shots in the last game. The third line had zero shots. Sykora and Rucchin had zero shots in regulation (Prucha with two). The fourth line had one shot (although out of the three lines, the fourth line got the crowd going with a long shift, and then a penalty drawn by Moore). While shots aren't everything, it is something. What the third line did (especially Ward) was hit a lot, as did the defense which helped in conrtolling the puck, but they gotta do something with it. Jagr played 27 *** minutes - he can't keep that up.

I'm curious to see who wins. I voted for Prucha but any of the guys mentioned above certainly deserve it too. I could see Dom Moore taking it, since it usually goes to a bottom 6 guy.

I VOTE FOR THE WHOLE TEAM! All bought into the system and plan, and with the exception of some post-Olympic hiccups, this team has totally gone above and beyond...

I voted for Kasparaitis because of his attitude to his teammates, rookies, and his leadership by example on the ice. Ward, Prucha, Lundqvist, Jagr, Straka, Nylander, Ortmeyer --- could just as easily win it imo.

I love Orts personally because I always see him hustling his *** off and even when he doesn't get a lot of time, he really buckles down on the PK.

Oh, and Jagr needs to break the record tonight. I don't want this to be a distraction down the stretch as we go for 3rd place.
