The process of All-Star balloting this early in the year points out what a worthless system it is. Like most sports, the only appearances that really mean something are the ones the coaches pick.

The San Jose ballot stuffing incident pretty much did in the fan-voting aspect of it for me.

You think it should be done like baseball? The winning coaches in last years Stanley Cup should pick the players. I don't like that system at all. Sometimes the coaches can be biased.

Nice to see the player (Paul Mara) who leads the defenseman in points in the league is on the ballot

What a *****in joke.

Nolan? Langenbrunner? Sykora? Brunette? Gomez? Comrie? Allison? Brind'Amour?

Why don't they wait til January and then make the ballots based on how everyones doing? Not just base it on big names. The NHL All-Star game is like a popularity contest in high-school. Nothing but a waste of time.

My comment about the coaches picks being meaningful is only in so far as what we have today.

Ideally, I think the PLAYERS ought to vote in the All-Star rosters, the fans vote in one G, one F and one D [in advance], and have the previous season's Stanley Cup coaches automatically be at the helm. Obviously, players can't vote for themselsves and can't vote for anyone on their team. That would probably be the most fair system IMO...

...you have to basically own up as to who the best players you face are, thus avoiding the nepotism thing. We'd still see all the Foresbergs and Hasek's but we'd also seem a lot of good players we never hear much about I bet.

Because the entire selection process is a big joke.

Who here thinks that Heatley will actually be voted on to the roster despite not playing a game?

Because they actually drew these up months ago.

These are always ridiculous. I don't see why it'd be so hard to wait a few months.

All I can say is that Kovalchuk had better be on the roster this year.

They must be out of their mind for suggesting that last years MVP might play.

selections are completely dependent on previous years' performances.
