Ouch! That B+ for Francis Bouillon I saw above is like having some stinging solution splashed in my eye. That grade would mark him as one of the better players on the team, yet it's not certain that Gainey would even sign him for next season. Someone is judging him through rose colored glasses.

What's with this ABCD Thread?

I thought I'd grade one player and give my argument after. Feel free to do the same for a different player.

Richard Zednik

grade C

Oh my, this guy is hard to grade. It all depends on what were your expectations before the season. If you though that his offensive game improves with the new rules, due to superior speed, you probable give him a D. If you knew his lack a creativity would hold him back with a more creative NHL, you are bit disapointed with his play. In both cases, you wish Zednik wakes up for the playoffs.

He does have a good shot, and his quite decent around the net. What he lacks his hockey sense and creativity. Skating wise, the guy hasn't lost a thing...it seems he trains a lot on his legs and lower body strengh. Big mistake, because it's the rest of the game he needs to improve.

''Zednik takes a pass from Koivu, skates through the neutral zone, across the blueline...( Zednik proceed to stop skating, and fail to do anything else in the next 2 seconds) Oh he loses the puck...''

So you think Eric Lindros doesn't keep his head up? You haven't seen Richard Zednik. No wonder why he gets severly hit by Volchenkov at least every game they play each other. He seems to be unable to control the puck without looking at it. He is not a bad passer, but since he doesn't see his teamates, who would he pass to anyway? .

Worse, the guy can't accelerate with two hands on his stick. Sounds funny heh? It's clearly not. This means when it's time to make a pass or take a shot, he stops skating. He's actually very good on the powerplay, when everything is slowed down and he doesn't need to skate. He keeps two hands on his stick, and is actually quite good at one-timers.

He does have a winning attitude, and he's not soft. Actually I find him and Bulis to be dirty players at times as it looks like they choose to hit when the target is in a bad position. He is intense in the offensive zone, but lacks motivation everywhere else.

So he gets a C. He's average but he could be so much more.

Rankings according to my expectations of each player before the season. A+ grade means surpassed expectations.

David Aebischer B (tough to rate on so little playing time).

Steve Bégin A (hit a wall once when overused by Julien in the middle of the season but can't blame him for being misused, so he gets the perfect grade nonetheless).

Radek Bonk C (thank god he woke up, even if too late).

Francis Bouillon A (as a 6th Dman, I have no complaints, he's perfectly suited for the role).

Jan Bulis C+ (would be lower if it wasn't for his 20g, missed assignments and a cheater defensively all year, which wasn't the case in previous seasons).

Jean-Philippe Côté B+ (I like him, hope he gets the 7th spot next year).

Pierre Dagenais A (just as crappy as I thought he'd be).

Mathieu Dandenault B- (mainly for his horrible first half where he was useless offensively, defensively and taking lazy penalities as a bonus).

Yann Danis B+ (can't ask for much more from a rookie goalie).

Aaron Downey A (pleasant surprise).

Jonathan Ferland B+ (an other fav of mine, I see a future for him on this team).

Chris Higgins A+ (my expectations for him next year will be really high, boy do I like this player).

Cristobal Huet A+++++ (season savior, I won't try to make it sound like I saw it coming either).

Raitis Ivanans B (meh).

Saku Koivu B (Love him, but he had unusually long streches where he seemed completely out of it this year which is uncharacteristic).

Andrei Kostitsyn A+ (I was actually very impressed of the little I saw at the NHL level. Better looking than I thought he'd be after seeing him stunk up the joint in the AHL).

Mike Komisarek B (A in the latter part of the calender and valid excuse for his troubles earlier).

Alex Kovalev B+ (a bit more finish would have been nice I guess, but this is the Kovalev I know and like most of the time. Didn't think he was that much of a diva though but as long as we don't have too many, not important).

Maxim Lapierre NA (Like him a lot but he didn't play to form an opinion on him at the NHL level).

Andrei Markov A (I had extremely high expectations for him, he did not disapoint one bit).

Garth Murray A+ (an other pleasant surprise, Ward's long awaited replacement I guess).

Alexander Perezhogin B- (not losing faith, but his development is MUCH slower than I had anticipated).

Tomas Plekanec B+ (was an A+ until he considerably slowed down about 3-4 weeks ago. Classic case of a rookie hiting a wall, I still like him a lot).

Mike Ribeiro C (was never a fan of his, but for such a talented and slick but fairly one-dimensional playmaker, 50ish points doesn't cut it in the new and improved NHL which should have given him a head start on his former season's successes).

Craig Rivet A+ (I like him, but he was even better than anticipated. The New NHL I thought would cause him problems, quite the contrary it now seems).

Michael Ryder B- (bunch of goals sure, but is not the shadow of his effective and impressive former rookie self where he would work hard along the boards, create chances by himself and use his teammates effectively. Whatever happened to that Ryder I don't know, but I hope he's back next year. Everything in his game save for his goal scoring touch has fallen appart).

Todd Simpson A (does what he's supposed to do I guess, which is not much).

Sheldon Souray B- (I had high hopes for Sheldon, salvaged his season in the latter part, but was simply horrible at the begining. Grade is an average of those 2 periods).

Mark Streit B+ (wasn't expecting much, not overly impressed but he showed he could play in this ligue, that's enough for me).

Niklas Sundstrom C- (not a fan of his, but once it became clear he was the odd man out, I would have thought he'd fight to have his spot back. that didn't happen).

Richard Zednik D+ (hard to be satisfied by a one-dimensional goalscorer who doesn't score. Been playing better lately though. Could salvage his season with a monster performance in the playoffs).

why no love for Bouillon and Bulis ???

Bouillon was extremely solid he deserves at least a B and Bulis has 20 goals this year so he deserves at least a B too !!

David Aebischer: B
Steve Bégin: B+ (brings a lot to this team, such a hard worker)
Radek Bonk: C (awful start but really useful after the olympic break)
Francis Bouillon : A- (extrmely reliable, underrated)
Jan Bulis : B (hot and cold but had his most productive season ever)
Jean-Philippe Côté: Incomplete
Pierre Dagenais: F (just awful)
Mathieu Dandenault: B (was bad under Julien, really picked things up under Gainey)
Yann Danis: B (surprised me, actually)
Aaron Downey: B-
Jonathan Ferland: Incomplete
Chris Higgins: A- (had a slow start, which is understandable, he's been awesome in the last 30 games or so, a lot of potential)
Cristobal Huet: A+ (simply terrific this year, the reason we're in the playoffs)
Raitis Ivanans: Incomplete
Saku Koivu: B (rough year...a 1st line centre should be more productive...he's still a leader in my eyes, though)
Andrei Kostitsyn: Incomplete (I have a good feeling about this kid, though)
Mike Komisarek: B (rough start but picked things up in the 2nd half...delivers good hits, so much potential)
Alex Kovalev: A- (could have scored more goals, he still remains our most dangerous weapon on offense...our offense would be weak without him...sooo talented)
Maxim Lapierre: Incomplete
Andrei Markov: A+ (our MVP...he's having a tremendous year...well on his way on becoming an elite defenseman)
Garth Murray: B- (energetic, good speed, solid hitter, a good acquisition by Gainey)
Alexander Perezhogin: C (pretty much a non factor this year but it's his first year...showed promise during his run with Kovalev and Ribeiro)
Tomas Plekanec: C+ (great speed but he misses so many scoring opportunities...he has potential, that's for sure)
Mike Ribeiro: B (hot and cold...still has attitute problems)
Craig Rivet: A (great year for Rivet)
Michael Ryder: B+ (inconsistent but he's had a solid 2nd year nonetheless)
Todd Simpson: C
Sheldon Souray: B (slow start...good offensively but needs to work on his defensive play, commits too many mistakes)
Mark Streit: C- (rough year for him...showed some promise towards the end of the year though)
Niklas Sundstrom: F (absolutely awful...doesn't seem to care)
Richard Zednik: C (awful year for a guy that can score 30 goals)

David Aebischer: No Grade (played 5 games with us for Christ's sake)

Steve Bégin: A- (absolutely essential grinder)

Radek Bonk: C (semi valuable shutdown center who provided next to no offense this season)

Francis Bouillon : B (Has been solid for the most part but is still a number 5-6 D-man in the league)

Jan Bulis : B (Exploded in the second halfof the season, showed a lot of speed and is a valuable element on the third line)

Jean-Philippe Côté: No Grade

Pierre Dagenais: D (was pretty bad but showed some desire and effort before ultimately getting demoted)

Mathieu Dandenault: C+ (was crap for part with his dumb penalties but turned it around after the Olympic break)

Yann Danis: B (showed a lot of poise during his stay)

Aaron Downey: B- (great pickup)

Jonathan Ferland: No Grade

Chris Higgins: A- (Insane hockey sense, Will be an extremely important part of our future, Slow start ofensively but the effort was always there, Is learning the tricks of the trade at an incredibly rapid rate)

Cristobal Huet: A+ (Outstanding job all season through the thick and thin, showed he can perform under pressure)

Raitis Ivanans: No Grade

Saku Koivu: B+ (overall a typical season from special k, he's always been plagued by a slow mid-january february stretch so why is everyone complaining? )

Andrei Kostitsyn: B- (Rough around the edges but shows a LOT of potential)

Mike Komisarek: B- (Was brutal in the beginning but that's understandable, Looks like he'll fulfill his potential now)

Alex Kovalev: B (Our only true gamebreaker, I'm generally satisfied with his output, can't ask for much more)

Maxim Lapierre: No Grade

Andrei Markov: A (His hockey IQ is through the roof, still makes small mistake but there's no question that he's a legitimate number 1 d in the league now, just hope he doesn't ask for too much money)

Garth Murray: B+ (nice pick-up, is a very valuable depth player that can serve well in the playoffs)

Alexander Perezhogin: B- (I thought he showed a lot of desire and skills, the finish is still not there but I think it'll come along now, I still have a lot of faith in him)

Tomas Plekanec: B (Was great in the beginning of the year despite a couple of rookie mistakes here and there and some giveaways, A little more quiet these days but I like him a lot)

Mike Ribeiro: C+ (Typical season for Ribs which doesn't necessarily bode well for him though he is showing improvement in some facets of his game)

Craig Rivet: B+ (Unsung hero)

Michael Ryder: C (screws up chemistry in every line but he's got 29 goals so can't really complain, still, Ryder isn't the Ryder of old...you know the guy who worked his butt off every shift and who played with the intensity of a Begin)

Todd Simpson: B (I haven't noticed him so he must be doing his job minus the agitation)

Sheldon Souray: C+ (was BRUTAL at the start of the season, those trade rumours sure woke him up good)

Mark Streit: C (getting better)

Niklas Sundstrom: C+ (where the hell is anyway? He started out well enough...)

Richard Zednik: C- (biggest disappointment this year)

David Aebischer: B-
Steve Bégin: A- (direct responsible for Bonk's rebirth, too!)
Radek Bonk: C- (Is an A since the olympics, seriously...)
Francis Bouillon : B (nice to have a THAT reliable 5th D-Men)
Jan Bulis : B+ (A.K. most be VERY good ton consider him leaving)
Jean-Philippe Côté: C+ (Don't think he has the upside to turn in something else than a career 7th D-Men on one hand, but on the other, made me REALLY think about Francois Beauchemin...)
Pierre Dagenais: E (It's a shame such a good shooter can't actually do anything else)
Mathieu Dandenault: C (Very, very poor's man Bret Hedican. Downright awful for the 40 first games)
Yann Danis: B
Aaron Downey: B- (Plays with heart and balls out)
Jonathan Ferland: Incomplete
Chris Higgins: A (Brian Savage... reverse! Terrific defensive play.)
Cristobal Huet: A+
Raitis Ivanans: Incomplete
Saku Koivu: B+ (EXTREMELY underrated)
Andrei Kostitsyn: B- (shown good things. Maybe the reason why Bulis will leave)
Mike Komisarek: B- (Good since game 40.)
Alex Kovalev: B (Too much nights off, sorry)
Maxim Lapierre: Incomplete
Andrei Markov: A (Wanted to give only one A+.
Garth Murray: C+ (Has shown itensity, but somethimes I wonder... where's the beef? Brought more than Hossa could do, though)
Alexander Perezhogin: D+ (Particulary unimpressive, and I hope he isn't the one to put Bulis out of the lineup. Doesn't have for too long this side of the Atlantic.)
Tomas Plekanec: C+ (If he was just a little bigger, he would be a lock for 3rd center, PK, and deliver between 30 and 40 pts per year. What happen with Chipper and Ribeiro will likely decide his fate here, has he's really somewhere between the two)
Mike Ribeiro: C+ (Is very underrated here. The end of Dagenais era was good for him)
Craig Rivet: B+ (His play regressed since the olympics, but he's been good nonethless. Should never be considered more than a 4th D on any team, though, simply lacks talent to do so.)
Michael Ryder: C (CHERRY PICKER)
Todd Simpson: C
Sheldon Souray: B- (Had the same curve that Dandy and Bonk)
Mark Streit: C
Niklas Sundstrom: E (ridiculous)
Richard Zednik: C- (Was never consistent to begin with, and is on an off-year)
