Sharks' Record with Ville Nieminen

The San Jose Sharks are 16-5 since acquiring Ville Nieminen from the New York Rangers on March 8th. Over that same time, the Rangers are only 8-11. Coincidence?

I shall call this the "Ville Nieminen effect."

haha, I was just thinking about how this team would be with Ville. He's a good energy player, still wish we had him (but without all of the dumb penalties).

He shows up for the playoffs though...SJ is going to love him when he turns it up a notch.

agreed I think Hossa could have fetched what Nemo fetched maybe more, since we will need that pain in the @$$ player in the playoffs, Hossa aint gonna all of the sudden turn it on in the playoffs. Immonen must play over Hossa.

I'm pissed too. Ville is an important player for a team in important games. It sucks that he was traded for Ozo.

The regular season records are a coincidence. I'd like to see how far SJ goes in the playoffs. If they get to the conference finals I can't see it being a coincidence. Cup with Colorado, Finals with Calgary. He's great in the playoffs.

Some hockey people consider SJ the scariest team in the Western Conference. Cheechoo has proved himself in last playoffs, and JT doesn't have the weight of the hockey town's expectations on his shoulders. SJ always had a good defensive corps and both Toskala and Nabokov are good goaltenders... Plus they've acquired Ville

Considering how bad penalties have been an achilles heel I don't where Ville would actually help that situation

But in all seriousness, it's always weird to look at stats like that. But in all honesty, SJ has been a flat out different team since Thonrton arrived.

Hossa was picked up for nothing...

do you really think he gained value as the season progressed? From what, not playing or not scoring?

I liked Niemo a lot. Thought his combination of peskiness and skill, along with size and grit was a great fit for the Rangers. But Edge makes the point - he just took too many penalties and when he wasn't taking penalties he was tentative and thus ineffective. He couldn't consistently find balance here. Not sure what type of success he's enjoying in San Jose because when I watch the games it seems as though Thornton's on the ice with Cheechoo for 60 minutes per game (Ekman's name has been called a lot too of late).

Rangers sucked during that period due to absence of key D-men and the goaltender in their line-up. Nemo wouldn't help with that

This thread was obviously tongue in cheek for all those shaking their head.

Certainly Nieminen is not the sole reason the Sharks have been on a tear, but he certainly has helped. For anyone that has consistently watched, he's been playing great for that team. He threw more big hits his first week in San Jose than he did all season for us. He's cut down on the penalties big time and has been an effective player. Not to mention his best friend is Vesa Toskala, and the coaching staff credits Nieminen with helping Toskala relax and enjoy the game more. Toskala is something like 18-2-2 since February.

Everyone has a fit somewhere.

Sometimes it just takes being in the right situation. Look at what Barnaby became for us after some less than stellar times in Pitts and TB.
