3 points for a win in regulation

hey guys, i was vaguely watching today's leafs vs sabres game and at some point one of the guys on TSN mentioned that next season they would instill a new rule saying that a regulation win will give you 3 points. Can anyone confirm this? thanx

he said that it would be a point of discussion throughout the off-season and it might come into play in the next few years

Why not just stop giving points of losing and use win % like every other league in the world

Agreed.

3 points for a win

1 point each for a draw

0 points for a loss

NO overtime in the regular season and NO shootouts in the regular season

That's what I've been saying all the time. Winning percentage is the true telling stat of how good a team is. All pro sports in North America use this system and it works fine and it's very simple. I'm really not a fan of extra points. ESPN did an article on point standings in the NHL with regards to the extra points teams earn from OT/SO losses. It explained that if you deducted all extra points given that the standings virtually stayed the same. I still say if you're going to go with a point system then give 2 points for a win and 0 points for the loss regardless of OT. This makes the win more important.

If you're going to do this, then there's no point in making wins worth 3. The idea is to make the same number of TOTAL points be handed out no matter what the outcome.

Make all games worth 3.

3 points for a regulation win
2 points for an OT or shootout win
1 point for an OT or shootout loss

Problem solved.

Actually, yes there is a point to my system. This switched to this in Europe for football because then teams push for the win more than a draw when a win is worth 3 points. It makes sense.

Shootouts and OT during the regular season make them less intriguing during the playoffs. It dillutes them. There is nothing wrong with a draw. In fact I'd rather see a draw than see a team awarded a point for a loss of any kind.

I say we do win = 2 pts, loss=0pts, tie=0pts. Teams would go all out in the final minutes of a game to win it, it would be awesome . Imagine if you're leading by a goal in the final minute of a game, that would be hell.

Well it's the same as what I'm saying other than your point distribution. I don't see why you'd consider a draw the same as a loss.

Because ties are like kissing your sister and if I kissed my sister I wouldn't consider it as if I'd half or third kissed someone, I'd consider as if I hadn't kissed anyone (same as a loss).

Maybe i should work for the NHL...that's exactly what i debated about and suggested months ago...hopefully they go that route...i don't like the point given in overtime but on the other hand I can understand the players not liking getting 0 points if they lose in a shootout
