St. John's Maple Leafs Game 10: Preview and Review: Oct. 29th, 2003

It is Wednesday, October 29th, 2003.

The St. John's Maple Leafs defeated the Milwaukee Admirals 3-2 in overtime Tuesday night at Mile One Stadium. The Leafs will be looking to sweep the 2-game series against the Admirals tonight at Mile One Stadium. Game Time is 6:05pm Eastern (7:35pm Newfoundland Time).

The Leafs enter the game one game under .500 at home and they will look to change that with a win Wednesday night. The Leafs played a strong first period Tuesday night but tailed off as the game went on and turned it on again in overtime. Look for the Leafs to play 60 minutes tonight.

The Admirals outshot the Leafs in every period and had some good scoring opportunites but could not beat Sebastien Centomo. The Admirals powerplay went 0-for-7 Tuesday night, but the Leafs can not expect that trend to continue. With the loss last night the Admirals are now 2-1-2-1 on the season and 0-0-1-1 on the road. The Admirals are 4th in the West Division with 7 points, one up on Utah and three behind Grand Rapids.

I thought I heard that Scottie Upshall was recalled so he will not be there.. Probably wasn't yesterday either..

Leafs really need to do something about the logjam on the farm at Defense.. A player like Bell can't be sitting out, and developing..

With 4 healthy scatches per game.. That tooo many..

Admirals and Leafs play to a Draw...Wellwood 2 Assists...Centomo 32 Saves

The Milwaukee Admirals and St. John's Maple Leafs played to a 2-2 tie Wednesday night at Mile One Stadium. With the win the Leafs improve to 4-5-1-0 on the season and 2-3-1-0 on home ice. The Leafs now head out on the road for a 5-game road trip starting Saturday, November 2nd in Binghamton and ending in Binghamton on Saturday, November 8th.

It was an even played opening 20 minutes Wednesday night at Mile One. Early in the first period the Admirals Jay Henderson fought the Leafs Marc Moro at the 2:43 mark. It was the Admirals that opened the scoring with a goal off the stick of Brad Tiley, his 1st of the season, with the assists to Timofei Shishkanov and Curtis Murphy at the 6:38 mark on a 4-on-3 powerplay. The Leafs tied the game at 1 with a goal off the stick of Jay Harrison, his 2nd of the season, with the assists to Kyle Wellwood and Nathan Barrett at the 9:05 mark. The goal off the stick of Harrison matched his season total from one year ago. Leafs veteran forward Aaron Gavey was given a 10-minute misconduct in the first period for showing up the official. Shots in the first period were 8-6 in favor of the Leafs.

The Admirals and Leafs traded scoring chances in the second period but it was the Leafs that managed to find the back of the net. The Maple Leafs took a 2-1 lead late in the second period with a goal off the stick of Karel Pilar, his 2nd of the season, with the assists to Chris Chartier and Kyle Wellwood at the 18:39 mark on the powerplay. Shots in the second period were 14-9 in favor of the Leafs, 22-15 in favor of the Leafs through 40 minutes.

The Admirals managed to tie the game at 2 early in the third period with a goal off the stick of Mike Farrell, his 3rd of the season, unassisted at the 4:55 mark. The Admirals also held the edge in shots in the third period by a count of 13-8, 30-28 in favor of the Leafs at the end of regulation.

There would be no hero in overtime Wednesday night for either team. Shots in the extra frame were 6-3 in favor of the Admirals, 34-33 in favor of the Admirals in the game.

Yeah he left the game the other night with an injury. It was a result of a 2-handed slash by Mike Farrell from the Admirals. It is not like he was just skating up the ice and hurt himself, he took a pretty good slash. Hard to defend against that.
