GDT: New Jersey Devils (45-27-9) at Montreal Canadiens (42-30-9) 7:30 p.m. EDT

GAME: New Jersey Devils (45-27-9) at Montreal Canadiens (42-30-9)

TIME: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. EDT.

Previews also available at: NHL.com, tsn.ca, and FaceoffMagazine dot com
Three weeks is all it took for the New Jersey Devils to go from a postseason question mark to an Eastern Conference playoff team. One more day and they could be improbable division champions.

New Jersey seeks its 11th straight victory when it faces the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre in a pivotal regular-season finale for both clubs.

The Devils trail the Atlantic Division-leading New York Rangers by one point and are tied with Philadelphia - against whom they own the head-to-head tiebreaker - for the fifth seed, while the seventh-place Canadiens need one point to advance to the postseason for the third time in four seasons.

Montreal has a one-point lead over Tampa Bay, which is trying to hold off Atlanta for the eighth and final playoff spot. The Lightning conclude the regular season Tuesday when they host Washington.

The Devils are in position to overtake the Rangers and win their sixth division title in nine seasons, needing one point and a New York loss in regulation against Ottawa on Tuesday to do it.

New Jersey owns the first tiebreaker (wins) and the second (head-to-head) over the Rangers, and can clinch the division after trailing New York and Philadelphia by 11 points as recently as March 26.

Since then, the Devils have run off 10 consecutive victories, including three over the Flyers, and outscored their opponents 38-19.

"It was far-fetched to think about the title," goaltender Martin Brodeur said after the Devils' 5-1 win over the Flyers on Sunday. "We just went about our business. It took us all these games in a row to put us in this position."

Brodeur has a 1.88 goals-against average during the streak and allowed three goals or less nine times.

Against Philadelphia, the high-scoring trio of Brian Gionta, Scott Gomez and Patrik Elias combined for four goals and three assists to back Brodeur's 25-save effort.

Gionta, whose 46th goal extended his point streak to 14 games, is tied with Pat Verbeek for the franchise single-season goal record.

Gionta has three goals and three assists in three games against Montreal this season.

The Canadiens have alternated wins and losses in their last five games following an eight-game winning streak. They have just 12 goals during that span.

"I'm not worried about it," said Canadiens coach and GM Bob Gainey after a 4-2 loss to Buffalo on Saturday. "We've been in this mode for six, eight weeks and we haven't been able to stretch ourselves away from that line that's drawn between the eighth and ninth team."

Michael Ryder scored his team-high 30th goal in the second period and Mike Komisarek scored just 45 seconds later, but the Sabres' Ryan Miller stopped 43 shots, including all 15 he faced in the third.

Ryder is the first Canadiens player to reach 30 goals since Richard Zednik in 2002-03.

STANDINGS: Devils - 99 points, 2nd place (tied), 1 PB, Atlantic Division. Canadiens - 93 points, 3rd place, 18 PB, Northeast Division.

TEAM LEADERS: Devils - Gionta, 46 goals and 86 points; Gomez, 49 assists; Jason Wiemer, 98 PIM. Canadiens - Ryder, 30 goals; Saku Koivu, 44 assists; Alexei Kovalev, 64 points; Todd Simpson, 130 PIM.

SPECIAL TEAMS (through April 16): Devils - Power play: 17.8 percent (77 for 432), 18th in NHL. Penalty killing: 81.7 percent (281 for 344), 19th. Canadiens - Power play: 19.4 percent (89 for 459), 6th. Penalty killing: 81.0 percent (384 for 474), 21st.

GOALTENDERS: Devils - Brodeur (42-23-7, 5 SO, 2.56 GAA); Scott Clemmensen (3-4-2, 3.35). Canadiens - Cristobal Huet (18-10-4, 7, 2.14); David Aebischer (29-17-2, 3, 3.09).

SEASON SERIES: Devils, 3-0.

LAST MEETING: April 8; Devils, 3-2. At Montreal, Gomez had two goals and an assist, and Gionta scored his 43rd goal in New Jersey's sixth straight win.

ROAD/HOME RECORDS: Devils - 18-16-6 on the road; Canadiens - 24-12-4 at home.

You're kidding me, right? Too bad the world doesn't stop for the guy

Anyways, while I'm here I might as well post my prediction. Now that the pressure of making the playoffs has been lifted from the Habs they won't be holding their sticks so tightly. With that said, I predict the following:

GOOD GUYS 3 DEVILS 1

goal scorers: Chris Higgins, Saku Koivu, Richard Zednik
Kovalev and Ryder each get two assists and Huet makes 28 saves :0)

All day this guy was excited to get the chance to make a GDT then you steal his thunder by making it so late at night.

Think of the utter dissapointment the poor guy is going to have when he wakes up tomorrow to make the GDT, and to fine one already made. The humanity.

It's not a GDT when there's so much selfishness man.

Look....the guy can post his thoughts in here. Maybe it doesn't feel like a GDT because you're not talking about the game. If you want to talk about your buddy then make a thread about him and discuss him. Not sure the mods would like that though

Exactly...anyways...let's keep this clean and talk about the game...Huet is going to start and rightfully so. The Gazette did an article about this:

I don't even know the guy but he sounded so excited today. He was pumped to make the GDT, his GDT not post his thoughts in someone elses.

I applaud your eagerness to make a GDT, but not like this, never like this...

Anywho a tight one Habs Win 2-0

Anyway, I think it sucks to steal the GDT from the dude that wanted to make it, but whatever.

Habs 2, NJ 1.

Huuuuuh? Steal? Come on...I came on here and posted a GDT...Sorry I don't keep track of every post by every user 24 hours a day. I've been wanting to do a game day thread all day as well...No, I never posted it because I worked 14 hours today and now I have to listen to this? Respect is something you should be giving everyone. Please Please Please stick to the thread topic. Thanks

If you wanted to do a GDT all day you should have told us, but my heart goes out to HABS911 I know he would have done a great job!

Maybe next time, if someone doesn't steal your turn

lol, by the sounds of this thread, habs911's wife/girlfriend is going to find him in the bathroom at the end of a rope when after he discovers this thread. It's not that big of a deal.

But still, I guess if he wanted to do it... the Golden Rule and all that jazz. Not too cool to swipe his thread.

Well, I think by now, it's punishment enough for LesHabsFan. Maybe he shouldn't have created this thread, but that's up for a mod to decide. Maybe Habs911 can still make 1. But we've punished LesHabsfan enough now, taking up most of the first page of his GDT with this stuff.
