2002 versus 2003

Last year I kept track of the Oilers record by month and ten game segment. Here are the results so far this year compared to last year:

<table cellpadding=4>
<tr>October 2002</tr>
<tr align=center><td>GP</td><td>W</td><td>L</td><td>T</td><td>OTL</td><td>PTS</td></tr>
<tr align=center><td>9</td><td>2</td><td>4</td><td>2</td><td>1</td><td>7</td></tr>
</table>
<table cellpadding=4>
<tr>October 2003</tr>
<tr align=center><td>GP</td><td>W</td><td>L</td><td>T</td><td>OTL</td><td>PTS</td></tr>
<tr align=center><td>9</td><td>4</td><td>5</td><td>0</td><td>0</td><td>8</td></tr>
</table>
The next milestone is the ten game mark. Last year the Oilers record after ten games was:
<table cellpadding=4>
<tr align=center><td>GP</td><td>W</td><td>L</td><td>T</td><td>OTL</td> <td>PTS</td></tr>
<tr align=center><td>10</td><td>2</td><td>4</td><td>3</td><td>1</td><td>8</td></tr></table?

If the Oilers can beat Detroit on Saturday they will 2 points ahead of last year's pace. If they can maintain that throughout the course of the season they will finish with roughly 16 more points, or a 108 point season. We can dream!!

Well, it's interesting to speculate a little here. Why have the slow starts of the last two years? Last year we were all pretty much convinced that it was the lateness of making cuts to the roster that contributed to little chemistry between players and also some learning of the system(s) to play.

This year, the coaching staff was ready for that and made the cuts much earlier so that the pre-season games (esp. the later ones) were used more for practising the systems and getting used to line-mates, seeing who had chemistry, etc. But STILL we had a slow start...

Is it the youth of the team where it takes a while for them to settle down and figure out how to play, or how to mentally get up for the games, or...? I'm sure that has *something* to do with it, anyways...

But we all know what a quick start can do for a team come the stretch run, and those early points helping to make that run for a playoff spot more for positioning than getting the last spot...!

It certainly is difficult to put a finger on why they have gotten off to slow starts these past two seasons. I think if we look at their schedule to start this season you would have to reason that, on paper, it hasn't been the easiest one. I think the two losses to Calgary have really coloured the start in a negative light. Outside of Calgary, they are 3 and 0 against the teams we all think they should beat, which is encouraging because in the past the Oilers have tended to play down to their opponent.

If you consider Vancouver, Colorado, and St. Louis as top contenders in the west then losing three of those games isn't out of the question. Obviously, the Oilers didnít play well in two of the games, but I feel they deserved better against St. Louis.

They have a struggling Detroit team next, and then a long eastern road trip which includes some other teams who are currently struggling, such as Toronto and the Rangers as well as a Montreal team that does not score very many goals. If the Oilers can win 8 or 9 games in November they'll be in good shape.

nice post kerplunk... sometimes we have to step back and remember that the sky might not be falling.

of course, if we don't keep an eye on the sky it just might fall.
