OLN has Detroit and Edmonton instead of Ottawa and Tampa! First of all, they shouldn't have the games on at the same time like this. Second, Ottawa and Tampa could be one of the best 1 vs 8 series ever. What idiots make these decisions.

(a) They have to have games on at the same time, or they only get 2 games a night and the first round goes on a month. See NBA.

(b) DET-EDM is going to be a very good series too, IMO. And DET is a MUCH bigger hockey market than Tampa.

OLN is the US provider right?
Detroit is one of if not the most popular US hockey team/s.
So how is that the wrong decision?

detroit and philly are the two biggest tv ratings in the US... which is why we were always on ESPN... this isn't shocking at all. TB is tiny tv number and Ottawa is Canadian.

I don't think of teams as being from the U.S. or Canada, I think of them as being from the Eastern or Western conference and being a Flyers fan, I would like to watch the Eastern teams. Specificly I would like to watch Ottawa who is our most likely second round opponent if we advance. Also, other sports prosper because of the way they market their stars. What better chance could the NHL have then to have Ottawa and Tampa playing each other. Heatley, Spezza, Alfredsson, Havlat, Chara,.... against Lecavalier, Richards, St. Louis, and Prospal. Some of the most exciting players to watch. I'm not saying that Detroit doesn't have exiciting players but this is a matchup that I for one wouldn't want to miss.

get Center Ice.

OLN is trying to make money... not appease people. I agree, but it's the way it is.

I personally think we lucked out with the DET-EDM game. Nothing beats OT Playoff Hockey.

I've followed The West a lot this year, especially the Western Canadian teams. Detroit-Edmonton is going to be a much better series than the Tampa one. Then again, I have Center Ice, so I would actually rather OLN didnt ruin it with their crappy coverage.

I watched both games, I have Center Ice. I actually watched 3 games that were on at the same time. IMO, if you are a true hockey fan, you have center ice and watched all three games. I was going nuts trying to watch three games at once.
All games had their moments, until the last period (Detroit Edmonton exempt).

The OLN product will get better. Remember that it was pieced together after the NHL and NHLPA struck their CBA. There was no real time for them to prepare a product because they were basically given I think it was six to eight weeks to have the product going. Now, they hired the guy that does the production work for Hockey Night In Canada which is head and shoulders above any other hockey program out there. You can bet that he's up to his elbows right now trying to get the OLN hockey product fixed. I think this year you can pretty much consider a write off, but I'm willing to bet that next season, OLN is going to be VERY good in terms of hockey broadcasts.

At least OLN gives a damn about hockey. You can't say the same about ESPN. However, I'm surprised the NHL didn't talk to CNN SI to see if they would be interested in broadcasting games. You'd figure that with CNN being in Atlanta, what better way to promote the Thrashers than with something like that? What better way to help promote hockey in the south than by CNN SI doing the broadcasting?

Games 2-6 (if the series lasts that long) of the Tampa-Ottawa series are scheduled for OLN.

Hey, at least OLN finally move the score to the top of the screen, now all they have to do is reduce the size by 600%.

NBC wants better coverage across the country... those two games give them ability to show regional match-ups, which will give them a better rating for the day.

it's all about making money...

League-wide attendance is UP from '03-'04 in spite of the lockout. (Who would've thought that?)

Given that, it's a pretty tough argument to make that the league is trying to kill itself.

If by western conference you mean eastern conference you'd be right.
