Hopefully Gaborik is smart enough to pass. He should be looking for at least 7.5m to play for Minnesota and refuse to sign a long term deal unless Lemaire is given the boot.

The infamous section of Charlie Walter's column, "Dont Print That"...which is always taken with a major grain of salt...

http://www.twincities.com/mld/twinci...s/14407877.htm

I dunno, I guess if it's a starting offer, then that's OK, but they better be able to budge a little this time around or they could screw up a very delicate situation.

At least the little birdy didn't tell him this one...

Pretty big payout. I don't think he's at that level yet.

I believe Gaborik would be a free agent at the end of next season. If the cap goes up and 9 mil is the ceiling he should command at least 6.5. If the free agent pool is thin who knows what he might be offered. He should score 50 goals easily in the right situation. He would look good in a San Jose uniform although they probably couldn't afford him.

Redden and Chara will get 7.5-8 million. What makes you think Gaborik won't be able to get that as a free agent? And if as rumoured he doesn't get along with Lemaire he would be smart to try his luck as a free agent. I am sure the Leafs would be buyers.

Redden and Chara are among the top 5-10 defensemen in a league starved for franchise defensemen. As talented as Gaborik is, I think what the Wild offered him is fairly reasonable for a 23 year old winger. If he thinks he would be better off holding out for a 8 million dollar contract, the Wild should let him. With a strict salary cap, it is not reasonable to pay players like him at that ridiculous level. The Wild would be better off trading him away and building a solid team rather than knocking their entire salary structure out of whack.

He's not proven that he's a consistent game-breaker.

$5.5mill is a very reasonable offer for Gaborik... but I can see where CII is coming from...

If Gaborik hits the UFA market in a year, he could go to a team where he's the main offensive guy, playing in an offensive system - even if he just signs a 1yr deal with that team... and improve his own stock that way. He could sign 2 1 yr deals - 1 yr with Minny, hit UFA status, then 1 yr with another team.

In 2 yrs, he could again hit the UFA market, but this time with a lot better offensive numbers to negotiate with. I'm interested in seeing what a guy like Savard will get in FA - Gaborik is twice the player, but Savard will no doubt get some leverage negotiating after putting up the numbers he did.

$5.5mill is definitely a good deal though, but it depends on how long the "multiyear" is... for the Wild, no doubt they'd want him locked up for 5yrs for that, but for Gaborik, if he accepts the $5.5mill, a 2-3 yr deal would probably be better for him in the long run, and give him the option to go elsewhere as he's getting into his prime.

Should Gaborik get a bigger deal (comparitively.. ignore the first year or two of Nash's deal to match up the age/experience) than Rick Nash? Reasons?

If you ignore the two year difference in their careers, the numbers and play favor Nash IMO. 03-04 was an off year for Gaborik, and both had very simular seasons this year, PPG game guys who didn't play full seasons. Gaborik was better this year, but not enough to make up for how dominant a goal scoring threat Nash was in 03-04.

Gaborik is a more dynamic offensive player in the new NHL, Nash was a player made for the old NHL. Still he(Nash) managed quite well this season even though his biggest asset, his size, doesn't have the same value it used to(it still helps him no doubt).

Maybe Gaborik will get a bigger deal, i think he is more important to his club than Nash. But i would imagine it wouldn't be significantly bigger than Nashs'.

So i say simular contracts.

the one big difference between the two is that Gaborik is hitting UFA status after next season... when Nash signed his deal he still had 3 years before hitting UFA status.

that will play big into negotiations. at least it should.

I'm afraid he might leave Minny and then become a top 10 player in the league. That would suck, but who knows.

I have read somewhere, the strib I think, that they should offer gabs a contract that is structured like nash's

I don't think Redden is going to get 7.5-8 million...

I think Redden will get around 6 million. Redden at 4.5M/year is a bargain.

No kidding. I'd spend 6 million/year on Redden any day.

I think Redden may get some even bigger offers, but at the end, I think about 6-6.5 million is where he'll end up. And he's worth it.

Being a Toronto fan, I'd take Redden at 6 million/year over McCabe at 4 million/year every day of the week and twice on game days.
