My thoughts...for what it's worth.

This team as it stands now does not have enogh skill, speed or heart to win the satnley cup this year or in the near future. Major changes must be made for this team to be a true cup contender.

Bobby Clarke See you later

For the most part he has done wonderfull job during his tenure as the GM. His lack of vision in the offseason and at the trade deadline hurt this team. Plain and simple he is old school and this league is now new school. I think he has had his run and now it's time for a change.

Ken Hitchcock See you later

His inability to take a goalie and give him the number one job was a detrement to this team. He names the wrong person captain, consistently gives ice time to vetrans who don't deserve it, has no control of this team and still tries to preach defense to his team. 82 games go by and he doesn't understand that offense wins games in this league now. His time has also run dry and must go.

The only way both or either one go is if Snyder some how sees the light or better yet sells the team to someone who will hold his friends accountable.

Forwards under salary for next year.

Jeff Carter $942,000
Niko Dimitriakos $625,000
Peter Forsberg $5,000,000
Michael Handzus $2,128,000
Sami Kappenen $1,520,000
Mike Knuble $1,520,000
Peter Nedved $2,204,000
Ryan Potulny $835,000
Keith Primeau $3,040,000
Mike Richards $942,000
Turner Stevenson $1,254,000

Not including Eager & Ruzicka (2 way deals)

Total $20,010,000

Defense under salary for next year.

Dennis Gauthier $2,000,000
Derian Hatcher $3,500,000
Randy Jones $800,000
Freddy Meyer $800,000
Mike Rathje $3,500,000

Not including Picard (2 way deal)

Total $10,600,000

Goalies under salary for next year.

Robert Esche $1,000,000

Total $1,000,000

Combined Total $31,610,000

RFA's

Simon Gagne
Branko Radivojevic
RJ Umberger
Joni Pitkanen
Antero Nittymaki

UFA's

Donald Brashear
Brian Savage
Eric Desjardins
Kim Johnsson
Chris Therien

Players who should be resigned

Simon Gagne
Branko Radivojevic
RJ Umberger
Joni Pitkanen
Antero Nittymaki
Kim Johnsson..depending on his health

Players who should be bought out or traded

Peter Nedved $2,204,000
Turner Stevenson $1,254,000
Derian Hatcher $3,500,000
Mike Rathje $3,500,000
Robert Esche $1,000,000 ( although at his salary he is capable of being a back up)

If half the salary counts against the cap we would have an extra $5,229,000 (minus 4 players).

This leaves the Flyers with 26,381,000 committed to 13 players. If Primeau retires (which in all honesty would be the best for him and the organzation, they could save his salary as well). Now they would have $23,341,000 committed to 12 players. Let's say they spend 10 million on thier RFA's, that brings them to $36,381,000 commited to 18 players. So if the Cap went up to 45 mil. they would only have around 9 mil to spend on a few players.

So basically they could only afford 1 marqee player (a forward or a defender) and some other core type players.

Best case scenario is they find a sucker to take on the salaries or some of the salaries of the bought out players listed above.

This team needs to find a couple of puck moving defensemen, a couple of skilled wingers and someone with some leadership qualties.

buying out both rachje and hatcher is not an option, the cap hit would handcuff this team for years.

clarke and hitch are staying too, sorry

I know it's unfortunate but either they eat the money or send them to the minors. They cleasrly don't belong in this league.

Thanks for doing all the leg work on the title post to this thread. I'll be referring to it often during the offseason.

One point: Rathje does belong. He was just playing with a hip injury that would render most of us incapable of unloading a dishwasher without gasping in pain. Buffalo doesn't have a slow defenseman but other teams do.

Ditto Hatcher but the difference is I doubt Hatcher will ever be whole in the knees again.

Thanks again for compiling the info.

if a veteran player is sent to the minors, does he have to go through waivers, and if he does and is picked up, is the team on tap for 1/2 of the salary?

I know that if you send a veteran to the minors and try to recall him, and he is claimed on waivers, then the team who initially signed him is still on tap for 1/2 of the salary.
