Yeah, totally agreed. Especially Savard. I don't see how this guy is SUCH an improvement over Ribeiro.

Our only immediate need is a big name scoring winger. Realistically I'd take Daze or Selanne.
This would give us something like:
Higgins-Koivu-Daze/Selanne
Ryder-Ribeiro-Kovalev
Perezhogin-Plekanec-Bulis/Zednik/Latendresse?
Begin-Bonk-Murray

On D I love guys like Mitchell, Skrastins and McKee but I think right now on our D the only one I'd get rid of is Souray. However if we trade Souray we need a d-man with a big shot and as far as I know those 3 don't have that strong of a shot.

I don't think Daze will ever come back in the NHL... he's done.

I'd like Spacek to replace Souray... trade Souray for help up front.
Redden or Chara would be nice too but cost way to much.

Selanne would be nice if we can have him for cheap because of Saku... I'd pass on anything over 2.8M

I'm not sold on any other players in that list...

Don't forget we can also pull some trades... it's not all about UFAs...
Souray, Zednik, Abby, Bonk, Ribs could be used to land a solid forward.

Just a little fantasy here:
Kariya - Koivu - Selanne... can you smell the chemistry?
Might lack grit, but this would be a sick PP unit for sure!
It won't happen, I know...

I doubt any of the players on that list--other than a few defensemen who will likely be overpaid and/or unavailable to a team like Montreal--would be remotely useful.

Have you been watching Samsonov, I know there's a dozen reasons it doesn't make sense, but still, he might be signable and not cost prohibitive, nahh, repetition of guys we have, but.....

Yeah. I was tempted by him and wrote a post about it a few weeks ago. I really like Samsonov and his speed & dynamic offensive play is so enticing.

But do you want a player who's going to cost upwards of $3.5 million (imo) and injury prone? I don't think Montreal can afford to sign another injury prone player.

Maybe, a big maybe.. Selanne, but only under $3M. There isn't a single other forward I would want from this crop. Arnott would be a huge overpayment for what he will bring.

I think they already said they wouldn't bring any big names in here, so I would forget about that. Elias would be nice tho.

I think we badly need an offensive defenseman, a big centerman who can make plays and play tough consistently and maybe a scorer (tho I like our young scoring depth now). But doesn't everyone? We also need some tougher bottom six guys, and a shutdown center would be nice too.

I think we will see a couple FA's in here.

Jason Arnott - Yes, and would see him coming back to Gainey's team.
Marc Savard - This is Mike Ribeiro playing with Kovalchuk and Hossa. No upgrade whatsoever.
Michael Peca - Another overpayed defensive forward with little offense. We already have Bonk.
Jason Allison - Too ugly.
Steve Rucchin - We don't need a two-way player, we need a game-breaker. We already have Pleks, Bonk, Bégin...
Mike Sillinger - Once again, good, but not good enough for our needs. Still wouldn't mind him.

LW
Sergei Samsonov - Small. But he would be real entertaining.
Brendan Shanahan - Will stay with the Wings.
Eric Daze - Maybe for $450,000.
Chris Simon - Lapierre, Murray, Ferland are all better and cheaper.
Vaclav Varada - See Simon, but even more useless.
Jarkko Ruutu - See Simon, but at least he's entertaining.
Georges Laraque - Why do we need a goon?! Just add grit, having one designated goon won't help!

RW
Teemu Selanne- Would be great, but I don't see him leaving California.
Petr Sykora - No way. Soft soft soft.
Anson Carter - Would be great.
Petr Bondra - We have too much players that play the same style of game. Woudl rather give an opportunity to a younger player.
Mike Grier - See Simon.
Scott Mellanby - Will stay in Atlanta.

D
Zdeno Chara - Overrated, but I admit he would be great!
Wade Redden - Will stay in Ottawa.
Ed Jovanovski - Incredibly overrated. No way at his price-tag.
Bryan McCabe - Can't play D.
Pavel Kubina - A bit soft, but I wouldn't mind.
Kim Johnsson - Would be pretty good.
Jay McKee - Him I want, but he shouldn't make too much!
Willie Mitchell - Pass.
Eric Desjardins - Old, never was very good defensively.
Ruslan Salei - Would he really solve any of our problems? Nope.
Karlis Skrastins - See Salei.
Dick Tarnstrom - Can't play D.
Jaroslav Spacek - Nope.
Jon Klemm - Don't see how it would help us in any way.

McKee is the guy I want Gainey to focus on. IMO, he's the player that brings the most improvement to this team. He isn't flashy or offensive but watch him play against Ottawa and you'll see just how effective he is in his own zone.

Is Danny Markov UFA?

I heard Danny and Andrei played great when they were matched up in the olympics.

In the center position, the only one I would consider would be Arnott.

I have a thing for Shanahan. I'd love the leadership he brings. He doesn't get any younger though.

Jarko Ruutu with Begin? Would be fun. I'd add laraque if he's cheap (always liked him).

Selanne to put with koivu. Anson Carter would be fun (a bit of a rugged style from the little I saw him...)

I don't see any interesting Dman. Not as an UFA anyways (I'd trade Souray for somebody safer but that's just me).

I'm pretty happy with our defensive corps. JF Cote would be great as a 7th.

With Hossa/Kovolchuk, I'd say he'd be an easy 80 pointer. Hell even Dagenais would look good with those two.

Spacek is better than Souray at controling the puck and has better passing skills.
He's also better defensively (not much, but still...)
Finally, he could replace Souray on the PP, although Souray has a better shot.

I'm not saying it would be a huge improvement, but it would allow us to trade Souray for offensive help.
I think Souray is one of the rare players on our team to have decent trade value while being easily replaceable.
