Just a look back at some picks made prior to the start of the regular season by NHL experts.

From the USA TODAY when asked who could win the Cup:

John Davidson: Boston, Calgary, Detroit, Ottawa, Philadelphia, San Jose, Tampa Bay and Vancouver. Surprise pick/long shot: Anaheim.

Pierre McGuire: Anaheim, Boston, Calgary, Detroit, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Jersey, Ottawa, Philadelphia, San Jose, Tampa Bay and Vancouver. Surprise pick: Nashville.

John Glennon (writer The Tennessean) -- Calgary, Detroit, New Jersey, Ottawa, Philadelphia, San Jose and Tampa Bay. Surprise pick: Chicago.

Kevin Allen (USA Today) -- Anaheim, Boston, Calgary, Detroit, Nashville, New Jersey, Ottawa, Philadelphia, San Jose, Tampa Bay and Vancouver. A surprise pick: Pittsburgh.

Mike Brehm (USA Today) -- Anaheim, Boston, Calgary, Detroit, Los Angeles, New Jersey, Ottawa, Philadelphia, San Jose, Tampa Bay and Vancouver. Surprise pick: Nashville.

Oddsmaker Danny Sheridan: Favorites: Philadelphia (6:1); Detroit (8:1); Pittsburgh (8:1). Teams at 100:1 or greater: Columbus (100:1); Carolina (250:1); Buffalo (500:1); Washington (750:1).

Larry Brooks in the NY Post: Regular season conference champs: Tampa Bay and San Jose. Conference Finalists: New Jersey over Montreal and San Jose over Calgary with the Devils beating the Sharks in the Cup Finals.

Mike Brophy in The Hockey News: Philadelphia over Calgary in the Finals.

Reminds me of the Lightning. At the beginning of 2002 they were named by the pundits (almost universally) the worst team in the league. Then they made the playoffs. In 2003-2004 they were supposed to be a middle of the pack team that would make the playoffs comfortably, but only because they were in the SE.

Preseason predictions are completely meaningless. A good number of writers admit they only reason they do them is because they have to.

So true. IIRC, when NBC did their preseason show, someone mentioned to JD that Robert Lang was on the Red Wings. He was baffled.

I don't mean to hang around your board after the series, but I had to comment on this.

Columbus was pegged to have a 5X better chance of winning the Cup than Buffalo, at a 500:1 longshot??? Unreal.

Predictions like that are a large reason Buffalo fans have had such a chip on their shoulder all season.
