I voted for Backstrom, and the reason why is simple. He is the better hockey player.
Sure Staal has the bloodlines and the size that everyone loves. And Toews has the leadership and grit that will attract many people. And I am sure they will both be good NHL'ers.
But I have never found anyone who can argue that when it comes to playing the game of hockey, that either one of them is better than Backstrom. He is the better skater, faster, handles a puck better, has the best vision, and is just the all-around better hockey player. He is by far the most complete forward in the draft.
When it comes to playing the game, what does Staal or Toews do better than Backstrom?
Then take into account that only one of them has played against other men on a pro level and to me the choice is clear. The ONLY think Backstrom doesn't have going for him is that he is from europe. If he was an N. American kid he may be the top pick in the draft.
I dont know what you guys have seen from the WC but Bäckströms first period vs. Canada in the semi was great, he flips the puck over opponents sticks, flat onto the ice on a teamates stick. He did that 5-6 times in the offensive zon and missed none.
If he is the most complete forward in the draft I cannot say since I havnt seen the others (apart from Kessel in the 1/4 final), but he is a very complete player. he was a regular on booth PP and PK and it was because he contributed (Bengt-Åke is not stupid).
I can assure you his 0 points doesnt reflect his playing. He and Nylander definetly had the best pure passing-skill on the team. Had he been a little faster he would have gotten a breakawy when Sweden were playing 4-on-5 vs. USA and in the final he got close to scoring a goal. He should shoot a little more when he gets the opportunity, he passed when he should have shot a few times in the final (but Sweden controled that game from goal 1)
I think his only weaknesses showed in the USA and Canada games, he needs more muscels and a little more speed.
