Howard's fate?

Since it looks like Holland will take a long look at the Wings' goaltending situation this offseason, it's likely he might dabble into free agency or trade for a #1 starter. Since there are no dominant #1 guys who are UFAs (the best guys available being Legace, Gerber & Huet, all having unspectacular records), Holland might look to trade for a goalie. IMO the most likely targets are Giguere, Raycroft, and Biron (Nabby's salary is too high). How likely do you think Holland and the rest of management would be willing to include Howard in a deal for any of those three mentioned goalies? Do you think he'll be the backup next year if we acquire any of these guys? When do you think he'll be a starter in Detroit or will he be dealt before then? Thanks!

Nobody knows what Holland will do. There are a number of options, where some of us might say there's aren't that many, cause for many it is obvious that both Legace and Osgood. will not return.

1. L & O leave, Liv/Howard as starter/backup (in any order)
2. L & O stay, both fighting for the starter-role
3. L stays, O leaves, L as starter, Liv or Howard as backup.
4. L stays, O leaves, L as backup, Liv or Howard as starter.
5. L stays as backup, Holland acquires a UFA as starter.
6. L stays as starter, Holland acquires a UFA as backup.
7. O stays, L leaves, O as starter, Liv or Howard as backup.
8. O stays, L leaves, O as backup, Liv or Howard as starter.
9. O stays as backup, Holland acquires a UFA as starter.
10. O stays as starter, Holland acquires a UFA as backup.
11. L & O leave, Holland acquires a UFA as starter with Liv/Howard as a backup.

I do have my preferences (option 2), but it really depends on a lot of things:

1. money (ie, Nabokov is expensive, does Holland want to spent that kind of money ?)
2. Does Babcock want his former goalie Giguere ?
3. Who to trade ? (ie, Holland could trade Lang for a goalie, but who would like to have him ?)
4. Does the Wings management want to go with veteran experience or do they think it's time for youth ?
5. Did Legace mean when he said that he doesn't want to be a backup anymore, including Detroit ?
6. Holland having a soft spot for Osgood and Legace (especially Ozzie..)

I really don't know what will happen (obviously..).
However I don't think Liv or Howard will be the starting goaltender next season.

I guess time will tell.

The only way Howard leaves via trade is if say Luongo on a long-term deal is brought in. Guys like Giguere, Biron, whoever are not going to be long-term solutions and Jimmy would still be on track to come in in a year or two, or even three if it gets pushed back a bit.

I know Holland doesn't usually give his hand away, but he's said there's virtually no way the Wings can afford to bring in a high-priced goalie, and I believe him.

I hope Jimmy Howard stays with the Wings and maybe even become their back-up next season...I see a lot of potential in this man.

I wouldn't worry about Howard. It looks like he's about where he should be. It's must a matter of when he's ready to make the move to the NHL.

Griffs got blown out 4-0 last night to the Admirals. Drew was in net.

Guess that answers that question....

All four goals (three on Drew and then an empty netter) were scored in the 3rd.

Jimmy Howard is best off with another season starting for Grand Rapids, and are going to look for a veteran who can fill the gap the next two seasons.

That's the right move. He looks good, but he needs more seasoning.
