How in the world did Buffalo get past Ottawa without a top D pairing, and how did they end up playing another team in the ECF that also doesn't have a top D pairing?

The reason San Jose lost this year was because they didn't have enough depth in their roster, especially in the defensive end. Nothing Ron Wilson could have done, not with having to play 2 rookies that are in way over their heads every game.
well said.

Well the Caps did have some great teams in the mid 80s with HURTING goaltending in Riggin, Jensen, Peters, Malarchuck etc...Peters always good in regular season and then falling off drastically in playoffs.

To think a scrap heap pickup like Don Beaupre held many of the Capitals goaltending records prior to Kolzig is baffling.

And when did I say its a GUARANTEE that this type of dman will automatically transform the Caps into a contender? Thats just one piece of the puzzle...THE biggest piece outside of a goaltender.

Say what you want but Ottawa was hurt big time without Hasek. BIG TIME. They really took it to the Sabres in many of those games and badly outshot/outchanced them at least a couple of times. Still Buffalo is a young aggressive team with a strong coach and a future star in goal. And they finish their checks and play scrappy...something Ron Wilson doesnt believe in.

BTW- I hated Waddel for not finding a way to get Miller on the US olympic squad. Dipietro, Esche and Graham was a very scary three headed monster.

Please.

You say Roloson is nothing special but he has played better than Ryan Miller. Even with the great Chris Pronger in front of him, Roloson has seen 4 more shots a game than Miller on average.

Face it, Buffalo has a defense that you would consider soft - no big names, 1 fighting major, and a Finn leading them with 82 PIM - still managed to get past a more physical Flyers team despite Miller not being great.

Roloson was solid but as Sharks fans confirmed nothing special. They just didnt get quality shots with the Oilers dmen blocking tons of shots and shutting down their PP.

Miller was better against the Senators than against Philly I give you that. But Phillies goaltending was worse than Buffalo that series, in fact it was awful.
