Tarnstrom?

I was checking this:

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=252903

thread out, and it looks like more than a few people see Tarnstrom as a fit for the Caps, both in skil set and price.

Thoughts?

I always thought he would be a good fit here (just watch his minutes please) ..... good on the power play and he moves the puck well. He was my second choice, behind McKee (thought it seems likely that McKee will stay in Buffalo).

no. he's a poor man's gonchar, and i hate gonchar. i think he had one really good year offensively (though now that i check, he was a -37 that year). look at it this way: his career numbers look almost exactly like the year bryan muir just had. do we really want to go out and get another bryan muir?

Tarstrom is an upgrade over Muir .. well, I think so anyway.

I think Pittsburgh completely mishandled both Tarstrom and Gonchar; played them too many minutes and in situations they had no business being in (like the PK).

Marshall,

Honest question...Did you start this thread to get the Tinner angry??

Trust me..you won't like me if I get angry....

Tricky Dick is soft and horrible in his defensive zone. I'm talking worse than Gonchar horrible....that says alot.

Now if we had 5 guys that could play and at least 3 or 4 of those 5 that could bring the pain and clear the crease then I MIGHT consider letting him on the team for the PP exclusively.

Also he is no spring chicken and would definitely want around the 1.6 mil he got paid this year....to McPhee that is more than Heward and Muir make combined. That would be 50% more than any Caps defender made this year in fact.

All this for a PP specialist that will make our D WORSE in their own zone.

I actually think Muir is better defensively than either Gonchar or Tarnstrom....a terrifiying thought.

I think its interesting that more than a few posters had Alison signing with the Caps . Please just say no (though I would love Elias (not happening) or Arnott (unlikely) as several people suggested).

how is he an upgrade? take out the one season with pittsburgh and he's a 5-8 goal a year guy (who plays about 50-70 games due to injury). defensemen have to be able to play defense, and tarnstrom just does not play defense well at all. we need a guy who is an upgrade over muir and heward, and tarnstrom isn't. of course, that's just me talking. my hatred for all things gonchar colors my opinion of anyone like him.

No. All you need to know is Edmonton is benching him for a rookie call-up in the playoffs.

I saw the same thread, was surprised as well... and then just realized everyone copied the original poster's projections and left him in that slot. Nobody cares about Tarnstrom and nobody cares about the Caps, so they just left them together.

Personally, I'd rather bore through my skull with an awl.

I've done that before...trust me the pain definitely outweighs the benefits.

One lives and learns. 'Tis still preferable to Tarnstrom, I am sure you will agree, with the wisdom of experience.

Here's another thread that poses an alternative to Tarnstrom.
